Went to see Souls of Mischief last night . They are on the 20 year anniversary of 93 Til Infinity tour called 93 Still Infinity. They killed it last night. They recorded that sh* t 20 years ago and managed to perform it like 20 year olds . I always liked them , but they after last night , I am convinced that those dudes are for real . Everybody was on point , and Dj Lex was on top of his game . The crowd was very small , maybe 60 people . That kinda disappointed me , but didn't seem to bother them . They still gave lots of love to the crowd . I highly recommend catching this tour if it comes close to any of you .......

^^Amerigo Gazaway ( of Gummy Soul ) was one of the opening acts . I have been a fan of this dude since I heard that Fela Soul joint , so I was excited to catch his set . BIG let down !!! He did a dj set that was terrible . His track list was very good , and he did some really nice live mash ups . BUT , his transitions were awful . It was either some terrible scratches and then slam in the track , or a train wreck when he tried to blend in a track . Not to mention that it took him about 15 minutes to figure out how to work the mixer . He actually had to text somebody to come out from the back and show him how to use it . Also , 5 minutes after he figured out how to work the mixer , he starts playing an old Roots joint that started to get the crowd hype , and his laptop crashes or something . The music stops and everybody is just standing there like WTF ?? Very disappointing ....

Didn't catch the name of the first group that performed . It was two young dude with their beats on a MacBook . Very backpack rap , but not too bad .

Ok, two things on this comment, my man Jay...
First off, that is why vinyl is still in effect in 2013.
You can never go wrong with it.With a small crowd like that, somebody should have just broke out a few crates.
Just because the technology is available, it does not necessarily make it better. The magic is up to the Magician.

Two; A lot of cats don't have a clue about the basic rhythm cadence, that we have all learned back in kindergarten.
Oh.. that's right they cut out music and art in a ton of public schools,my bad.
Kids need this shit in life.Life is an everflowing rhythm, with balances you throughout everything you do.
It is a social necessity that far to many people have lost.So I was not surprised to read that this DJ had no timing mechanism inside his head.In which it is almost ompossible to DJ without it.Or else you end up with nights like that.

@ BM31, the sad thing was , I was outside gettin lifted before his set , and saw him walk in with a fat stack of vinyl . So I was like bout time somebody spins real vinyl at a show !! Another big disappointment ... I hope that when I hear his music from here on out , I can get past that horrible performance .

Great write up JB. I always liked those guys too, a talented indie crew still doing it, good stuff. Regarding that DJ, I think BM summed up my thoughts on it. I feel for the guy, he's trying to make moves right now but he's gotta go back to the lab and practice more apparently.

I LOLed at this but it's not that funny and very true.

I watched this fantastic interview\mini documentary on the Worlds Famous Beat Junkies and what they have done over the years and they said some interesting things about this subject of technology in DJing. It's very true as well and it's coming from the realest cats in the game.

Skip to 4:20 to see what they say about what we are talking about.

...and then rewind and watch the whole thing, if you don't have time, make time, this is very dope and very informative.

yeah, i agree with Beatmaster - all these kids nohow to do now is scratch and beat-juggle and sh*t....they never learned the foundation to all of that, in learning about matching beats, first.

sounds like it was a dope show, otherwise. I can't remember the last time i been to a souls of mischief show.

peace.
