Yo its crazy how much some of these tapes are goin for on discogs! I found a tape from some producer overseas that we did a song for and seen it goin for almost $100 bux. and it was just a dubbed over another tape that he spray painted red and written on with a sharpie. The indie hustle has been goin on in the bay from the start and thats where our DIY roots come from. I remember walkin downtown Berkley and seeing dudes like Murs and Grouch slangin their tapes outside of Rasputin's. Little did they know how coveted those tapes would be 15 years later

Last week...

DJ Kid Grebo ‎– Paul C. Lives Vol. 1 Mixtape 2016

^Avoid this mix.

I was excited to buy this based on the produced by Paul C theme and the strength of the songs listed. Last week it arrived after purchasing from Tape Head City and I was pumped to bump it. Soon after opening and listening I started to suspect it was the product of a bootlegger who had nothing to do with the mix. Quite honestly it sounds like an mp3 mix that was broken up, and hastily recorded to cassette. Turns out that's exactly what this tape is.

My first suspicion was when Uptownkid mentioned hey I've had that for years and shows me a pic of his mp3 tracklisting from 2008. Then I figured the guy behind the mix was bypassed and it was just a bootleg of the mp3 mix because the sound quality was that bad. Turns out the DJ who dropped this is just a little prick and just doesn't give a fuck about it as long as it sold out.

This mix was "released" back in 2008 and circulated the internets for years as track separated mp3s. DJ Kid Grebo saw the tape resurgence, said fuck it I'm gonna make money off this mp3 and placed the mp3 as is (complete with short gaps in between each song) on cassette without telling anyone how it was sourced from mp3 or the fact that it's not even a fluid mix. That's right, I bought an otherwise free download of an mp3 mixtape that's unmixed with pause gaps (so an Itunes playlist basically) that was recorded to tape. I wanted a real mixtape that sounds like a mixtape instead I paid money for a free physical mp3.

I originally found out about the mix on this thread from the good people at the Diggers With Gratitude forums.

^Keep reading that topic. You'll see where I chimed in about my thoughts on how it was sourced and then you'll read DJ Greedo's defensive "so what, that's capitalism!" response to my feedback.

Anyways, he's pushing part 2 and part 3 over there, stating he didn't break up the mix like was done on part one but I'm guessing it's mp3 sourced as well and I'm never buying anything from a guy who has no clue how to handle basic criticism over a flaw he acknowledged is real but chooses to blame others on.

I am selling that shitty tape at Discogs now if anyone wants to buy a free mp3 recorded to tape. I created that Discogs listing as it didn't exist and I was careful to include the reality of how it was sourced for future reference.

I seriously can't stand it when DJs, beatmakers, MCs (you name the trade) come on to a forum to take ONLY positive feedback only and get defensive and insulting when negative feedback is provided. If you can't take the heat, keep your ass out of the kitchen.

^Very lame. I've seen that happen with punk/hardcore bootlegs too. Some guy downloads mp3 needledrops of a rare record and then sends it to a shady plant to be pressed up on LP or 7''. The sad part is the records sell even though it is often obvious what is going on.

Props for letting people know what's up and shame on that shitbag for doing what he did.
