Is there such a thing as a good portable turntable? Looking for something to take whilst digging

The only reason I want a portable is for the days I have a little bit of extra time on the road and I want to drop a needle on records for sale at any given store.

People say, "Well you have a smart phone, you can go to youtube and hear snippets of such and such"

That is true, but you can't find every record uploaded to the Internet, and sometimes cell service is sub par, or no WI-FI is anywhere, and sometimes it's nice to play test records that look beat up but might not sound beat up. Sometimes you just wanna drop a needle for 20 seconds and take it home with you for a better listening experience later.

So I do have a portable, but it is awful. It's a orange Pyle of crap. It's the kind of thing that constantly skips, always sounds horrible, can't deal with any kind of minor warp, and generally makes record store owners scowl when you bring it in to their store. I stopped bringing it. It's just too shitty and unpractical to use anywhere.

So it seems like there is a market niche that has yet to be filled. The decent quality portable turntable niche. There used to be a few fairly decent ones that are now defunct brands. But they ran on 8 D cell batteries so that's not exactly practical.

So does anyone have a recommendation for me? I heard that Vestax was coming back but I don't know if that equates to them bringing back their portable.

Holler if you know wassup.

Everything I've seen with "better" portables involves buying old stuff and tuning it up to work. There are some neat looking Sony models that sell for a lot nowadays. Vestax should definitely bring back the Handytrax. A store I used to shop at had one of those as their listening station. It actually worked pretty well but the non-DJs like me had to be careful when cueing and lifting the needle up because there was no cue button or lever. There is a social group in my area that meets monthly and the guy has a portable TT for playing records on. I can try to find out what brand that one is. It looked similar to a Handytrax. I'm not sure if it ran off batteries as well as AC power. I think he had it plugged in when I saw it, but it was definitely small enough to be portable.

^^ amen on the handytrax comment !! I really want one , but don't want to pay eBay prices . I also wouldn't mind copping one of those old school Columbia GP-3 joints . I've never heard a bad word about them . I have a Numark PT-01 portable ( the one before the usb version ) . I don't have any complaints other than its bulky . I wouldn't use it for an everyday player , but it gets the job done . Plus , it's cool for pulling samples as it has a useful flaw . If you put the speed select switch in between the 33 and 45 setting , you get a slower speed than 33 but can still pitch up and down . If you put it between 45 and 78 , you get an in between speed , that can also be pitched up or down . That comes in handy fine tuning a sample speed . I don't know if they all do this though .

Yeah, pretty sure that Numark or something like a rebranded version of it is the one at the vinyl social group I talked about. Wouldn't be surprised if it was made in the same factory in China as the Handy Trax either. The case and form factor on the handy Trax is better though.
