Was up feeding my daughter this morning and a band popped into my head that I hadn't heard in years.

I first heard Freon Dream when I was in the 10th grade. I moved in with my dad out in the country for this school year , and was surrounded by hick with terrible musical tastes , although I did have one friend that shared my love for hip hop and a few that were into punk and metal . I got invited to a party one Saturday night and was told some bands would be playing . I almost didn't go out of fear of how bad the live music would actually be . To my surprise , this band was the first to play . They had a different sound from anything I was listening to at the time , so I was instantly attracted to them . They were also selling cassettes out of the trunk of a car , so I copped that and wore the tape out ( seriously until it wouldn't play anymore ). I was very surprised to find their music on YouTube ....

New Christs - Incantations

As you may know, this was one of the bands Rob Younger formed after Radio Birdman disbanded. They didn't release an full LP until the late 80s and are sort of a cult project, releasing material every few years. I've heard them described as "noir garage" and I guess that's a pretty good description. They've got a lot more going on that you're average garage punk type group, more melody, changes in moods, etc.
For the most part, I've only familiar with some of their old material, but I do like them.

They released this album last year, which I had no idea about until recently, and the reviews were all pretty positive. It's a very good listen, especially when you consider how old these guys are and how long they've been doing this music. It does need a couple listens to sink in, but it's worth it.

RA - Scandanavia

So apparently retro-post-punk and death rock is now a big thing, but there is a lot of crap to wade through to get to the good bands. For every band worth listening to like Arctic Flowers, Bellicose Minds, The Estranged, etc. you get a dozens of faceless bands with no energy, originality, or hooks or stuff that is just part of the internet hype machine.

I don't know much about RA, but they are one of the good bands. They're sound is pretty stripped down and they've got hints of some 80s noise rock type stuff in there as well as the more melody driven songs. I wouldn't say this is a perfect record, but I do like it quite a bit. I could see the band really knocking it out of the park on the next one.

Right now...

Chicago Symphony Orchestra - Brahms Concerto In D, Op. 77 LP (RCA Victor) 1955

^This violin concerto is blowing up my speakers right now. You gotta add just a smidgen of bass to these classical records to get the full effect. I never touch the EQ with any other genre, but with classical I always give the low end just a boost so you can get the vibrations you'd get in your chest from being there (well, almost anyway.) This one is so beautiful and precisely played with moments of striking crescendos that grab you back from your drifting thoughts. I am beginning to understand why Brahms is so revered.
