Josef K - Only Fun in Town/Sorry For Laughing CD

This is a recent CD reissue of two albums by a cult Scottish post-punk group that put out stuff on Postcard Records, the label that was also known for releasing early material by Aztec Camera and Orange Juice. These guys are a bit less poppy than those bands, more wiry-sort of twisted indie take on funk guitar I guess. The story was that the band recorded the album, was unhappy with it, so rerecorded the whole thing changing up some songs in the process. The original album was shelved for a long time until an eventual reissue campaign came along. This it he most recent reissue, probably the third or fourth one over the years now. Also released on vinyl, but kinda pricey on that format. Try Darla Records for the best prices on this stuff if you really want the vinyl. There is also a comp. of non-album singles called "Young and Stupid" that is worth hearing, not sure if that is still in print or not.

Suede - Sci-Fi Lullabies 2xCD

This is a collection that covers the b-sides and non-album tracks (maybe not all though?) of this band's first three albums. I never paid much attention to the whole Britpop thing when it was big because I was too busy listening to other stuff, but several years later I've kinda gotten into some of it. These guys were obviously heavily influenced by Bowie's Ziggy period, probably T-Rex as well, then threw some other ingredients in to bring it up to date for the 90s. Nothing really wrong with that I guess. I do find my attention wandering a little bit midway through the second disc, but there are a lot of good songs here. Although you'd probably want to get their proper albums before this, I could see an argument for going with this first instead, especially if you tend to like b-sides more than album tracks when it comes to bands from the 90s.

Opposition - Breaking the Silence

Another one of those cult early 80s post-punk bands that are almost completely unknown outside of Europe. There seems to be a political edge to the lyrics, but these guys are quite melodic and moody, you're not going to get a ton of punk-inspired aggression here. This band's material has always been kind of tough to find. My copy is actually a paid WAV download from the band's official website. At some point I need to track down an old LP copy.

The New Christs - Lower Yourself 2xLP Reissue

Their album from 1997, only their second since the early 80s. Probably some of the best material I've heard from them. A good bit more aggressive than their newest album but still has those dark melodies. I was a bit worried about this one because it's on a label out of Spain I've never heard of, but it seems legit as far as I can tell. I should email the band's rep to confirm. But anyway, nice gatefold, appears to be pressed at Optimal in Germany. The album itself ROCKS.

Polak - 3x3 CD

Pete Fij from Adorable's project after that band broke up. If you don't know Adorable, they were sort of on the tail end of the 90s shoegaze boom but harked back more to straightforward 80s guitar pop. Think Darklands-era JAMC, the House of Love, etc. This is a good bit mellower, no loud distorted guitars riddled with effects. Good stuff though.
