Reta Ray - Volume 1 and Volume 2 7" Boxsets (Par-Dee Records) 1940s





^I bought these on a whim because they really don't exist anywhere and I was intrigued by the description of the music by Dustygroove as "off-color 1940s humor".

My God, off color must be pretty bad back in the forties, so I jumped on it hoping there would be some decent ridiculous sampleables on this somewhere. Turns out it's just a lot of scat-like rhyming bad jokes about women being horny, like "I'm Just a Bad Girl" and "They Can't Make a Lady Out of Me" and songs about Chinese immigrants and, something Donald Trump would enjoy, "Latin Love Is Not for Me" which is a song basically about Mexicans being lazy.

Sadly, there are no usable samples in this, it's just music for dead people. It's basically a collection of relics from a time when lounge music sucked balls and that thankfully is long gone.

I did however, find an interesting resource on the "Naughty Nightingale" as I was trying to learn more about it.

Little Willie John - Don't play With Love 7" (Jukebox Jam Series) 2013



^I always thought this guy was one of the most slept on of the James Brown affiliates on King Records. I have a couple of his old sevens on King, and when I was searching for a different 7" single from the seller that sold me those blunted funk sevens I stumbled across this and knew it had to be included on that order. I pressed play on the youtube clip and I was hooked...





^Maybe I should have put this in the new Soul thread because this guy just KILLS it on vocals.

^Ok, I'll admit, I pretty much bought this to look at it. Surprise, surprise, the EDM style remix is actually pretty dope. Not that it sounds Mo-Fi quality but it sounds pretty good for a picture disc.

This is a band I miss dearly. When this came out it quickly became somewhat of an anthem for me and a couple close friends. They were from Manhattan and didn't last long. I think they split up around 2008 after a second album. Anyway, these guys kind of reminded me of d generation meets the sleazy side of the stones. I miss these guys and from time to time I try to look around to see if they are up to anything, but sadly I always come up empty. Check out Bazooka. Unfortunately never released on vinyl. A couple of listens to this and it'll be stuck in your head for the rest of the day.
