I was pretty good this year, my wife was proud of how I reluctantly abstained from buying way too much. embarassed

I actually had the Half Japanese Box in my hands and I reluctantly opted out of paying the 63 bucks for it.

So I only got these three records and THEE tape...

  • Trojan Records: Rude Boy Rumble LP
  • Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band - A Little Something From the Road V.1 LP
  • Sun Ra - Calling Planet Earth LP
  • Metallica, No Life 'til Leather Cassette

I haven't even had time to break the seal on those records yet, but I bumped that tape in my ride (for whatever reason I apparently still have a functioning tape deck in my old ass car) and I didn't even know my car speakers could get so loud. I blew the roof off my Camry driving back home. This is when Dave Mustaine of Megadeth was lead guitarist for Metallica, and they FUCKING ROCKED. This is THEE demo tape, never before commercially available and it is unarguably the coolest thing dropped on RSD 2015.

In a nutshell, if you like Metallica's early years and or Megadeth, YOU NEED THIS TAPE. Cough up the 10 bucks, and figure out how to play it later. I'm gonna get it recorded to wav file but I gotta get this cassette tape drive bay for my computer first.

I bought the Tim Dog 7".

Because I liked the snippets rather than because it was RSD.

No RSD for me. I blew through my budget for records for awhile and didn't see anything on the lists that I absolutely had to have. Plus I refuse to participate in all the RSD bullshit like waiting in line for hours, pushing and shoving through crowded shops or whatever, which is what it's become in any decent-sized metro area these days.

Re: the tape drive thing, that looks neat so I googled it. I would approach with some caution, there are a lot of bad reviews for that thing. If you can figure out a way to run a decent older cassette deck into a Analogue to Digital Converter, then run that into your USB input/Soundcard, I'd imagine it would do a better job and be less likely to damage your tapes.

I chose to attend after the morning rush. I slept in, walked in, got what I wanted and left. If what I wanted wasn't there I would have ordered it online later, I'm not one of those giddy kids waits in line for 5 hours and brings mace to RSD to get the vinylses he wants. I'm fairly indifferent.

That said, I'm really happy with what I bought, as always, the sound quality of the records and that tape are above and beyond.

Appreciate that info, I never read the reviews. I don't know how serious I was about spending 125 bucks on a tape player, but I was happy to find one that fits inside a computer bay that takes up the same size as a DVD-RW drive. It used to be on Think Geek but it isn't any more so I have no doubt they kicked it out of their product line. I think what I'm going to do for real is buy a used cassette tape unit with RCA outputs and then I'll just run it thru my mixer and record to my computer that way. It would have been nice to find one built in, but not at that price when I can probably find a functioning player at a pawn shop for 20 bucks.

Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. Does your mixer have a USB output jack?

Re: old cassette decks, I will acquire one eventually. I grew up listening to tapes so I kinda have a little bit of nostalgia for them even though they're not my favorite format by a long shot. About five years ago I bought once of those fancy Sony Sports Walkman things as NOS on eBay. It's nice for listening to tapes on the go or at my desk on headphones, but for home listening I would prefer a real tape deck unit.

If you do buy an old tape deck, I think you can still get those cassette tape head cleaner cassettes on eBay or somewhere. I'd run one of those through any old tape deck before you start digitizing tapes.
