All of Les Rallizes Denudés albums are only available as bootlegs. They never had an official release of any kind that I know of. Their live shows were just legendary in Japan though, and the four or five boots I have are astounding in terms of sound quality. For the time they were recorded, these are definitely not audience tapes. They had to have come from a direct soundboard recording.

Flower Travellin' Band has some recent boots of all their albums issued on Phoenix Records. I picked up three of them late last year on a whim just to compare the sound quality, and it's very close to the original. Of course you'll never beat a real Japanese pressing, but I've seen these boots in the wild for less than $25 brand new, so for that price you can grab something only slightly inferior compared the the originals which I've seen go for hundreds of dollars in the past year or so.

Almost every single day for over a decade now, I run into at least one person that I have to deal with for work-related purposes that feels the need to save my soul. As a result, I have managed to amass quite a collection of things like Chick Tracts, various pamphlets, talismans, tapes, DVDs, and books like this one that they give me to inform me that I am involved in doing the devil's work. Out of all of the stuff I have been given, this is perhaps the most hilarious of the bunch.

"Vance Ferrell" (sounds like a 70s porn star) has absolutely no clue what he's talking about here. Among other outrageous things, he claims The Beatles and Bob Dylan conspired to invent heavy metal, "moshing pits" originated in 1954 at a church in L.A. that was infiltrated by Lucifer, and that thousands of people every year commit suicide at the instigation of heathens like Ozzy Osbourne and those evil devil worshipers that are Hall & Oates. Oh, and let's not forget Chrissie Hynde, who has apparently organized satanic orgies that involved the members of Van Halen, Motley Crue, and Bruce Springsteen. And the journalists at Rolling Stone never report on any of this because they have been brainwashed by Stryper and some Hare Krishnas.

Now I'm not pissing on anyone's personal religious beliefs here. Whatever people believe in is fine with me. But this is either outright stupidity or masterful trolling on a level most folks could only dream of. Either way it's funny as hell (pun intended).

Black Metal: Evolution Of The Cult
Dayal Patterson - Published by Feral House, 2013



Out of all the books written about black metal, this one is among the best. Dayal Patterson is an experienced music writer who has published work in Terrorizer, Metal Hammer, and Record Collector among other places. He starts off with a few pages dedicated to the roots of the genre (Sabbath, Coven, early Priest, and a few others), then dedicates chapters to specific bands, national scenes, and subgenres. Over the course of 485 pages he covers ground from Venom up through the beginning of the current post-black metal phase, and manages to make it all come across in a fairly cohesive narrative.

While it's not possible to shy away from controversial subjects when discussing this music, Patterson doesn't spend time either glorifying or making villains of anyone. He manages to approach topics like drugs, murder and other criminal behavior, suicide, contempt for religion, and even the rise of NSBM in a fairly even-handed manner. It goes without saying that there is some fairly graphic subject matter both depicted and described in this book, and that's as it should be. The black metal scene, maybe more than any other, has always been about pushing boundaries, and that's exactly what comes through in this book.
