That sounds interesting. I only started listening to Zevon a couple of years ago. I picked up Excitable Boy on LP and a budget CD set of some of his classic albums. All great stuff. I don't know too much about him, so I'd imagine that would be an eye-opening read.

John F. Szwed, 1997



The definitive biography of the great Sun Ra. Thoroughly researched and annotated, this is the best look at the life and music of Saturn's greatest musical export.

Szwed managed to interview the few remaining members of Sun Ra's family that knew him as a child, along with many of the musicians he worked with over the years, from his early days in Birmingham, Alabama to Chicago, New York, and Philadelphia. The writing is top notch, too. You can actually feel the atmosphere of places like Slug's Saloon, where the Arkestra became something of a house band for several years. He also provides some crucial insight into the social atmosphere that shaped not only Sun Ra's music, but much of jazz in general throughout the decades from the 1930s through the 1980s.

If your interested in learning more about the futuristic sounds of intergalactic space jazz that poured out of Sun Ra's mind and into his music, this is the place to start.

This book is an oral history of the punk scene in the US, roughly covering the years between 1980-1986. Most of the major players are present to give their thoughts and memories on the era, along with many people from smaller bands that were only known in regional scenes. Essential reading for anyone wanting to get a glimpse of the birth of American hardcore punk.

Chronicles Volume One
Bob Dylan, 2004



Bob Dylan is well known for his writing, even winning a Nobel Prize in literature a few years ago. In my eyes, this was a well deserved honor for the man. Not one single songwriter can compete. In this autobiography, he shows that talent extends beyond the boundaries of song into the world of actual books.

The blurb on the cover making a comparison to Henry Miller isn't empty praise. This thing reads like a fever dream. Wild, hallucinatory passages alternate with strangely touching personal remembrances of his family, friends, and folks he has met along the way. Even if you're not a fan of Dylan as a singer, this is worth reading simply as an exercise in masterful prose. I hope he publishes more volumes like this before he is done with this world.
