^That's too bad. I'll stick with Ministry on CD. What album was it? The Mind Is a Terrible Thing?

I have several Drastic releases and most of them are pretty good, mastered well, pressed at a good plant, etc. but I am so disappointed with their lack of customer service that I will not be buying any more.

The Swimming Pool Q's - s/t

A&M - 1984 US
Alt power pop? Power jangle pop? Indie jangle rock? This is a great listen that seems to sit on the edge of several genres. A later member of the 80's souther alt rock cohort, they're more dB's than R.E.M. or Pylon. The Q's songs are literate and evocative, and they back them up with solid musicianship, especially the guitar work of Bob Esley (who gets close to Tom Scholz's classic Boston tone on a few songs without sounding cheesy) and Anne Richmond Boston's (coincidence!) fantastic vocals.

The band split for a time, then reformed, released a well received lp in 2003, and now they seem to play shows fairly regularly. Here they are playing track 2 from the album 30 years after it was released:

^@whyaduck, what would you say is the best work from the SPQs? I see their records used from time to time but never checked any of them out.

I'm only familiar with Deep End and the s/t release - I think they're both worth picking up, but the self titled disc is usually under $5, so if you see it in good shape, grab it. The self titled is a bit more polished and pop, but Boston's vocals add almost a goth touch. Deep End isn't as commercial sounding, but Jeff Calder's putting in vocal duty on many of the cuts, and he reminds me of Fred Schneider a bit more than I'd like.

^Thanks for the tip. The Fred Schneider comment is funny. I'll probably grab a copy of the s/t when I can.
