Not that CDs have to go in here, they can go in the other topics as well, but I thought they deserved their own home in terms of a dedicated topic.

Show off and discuss your more interesting, unusual or rare CDs.

They don't have to be rare or expensive or even hard to find, but be picky about what's chosen. Try to pick more interesting CDs to discuss that maybe others don't know about.


NOTE: These points are not required but certainly recommended:

• Post Pictures (PLEASE don't put more than 5 pictures per post to keep page load time down) You can post as many times in a row as you want but 5 pictures max per post.
• Post Videos (Again no more than 5 per post for faster load times)
• Include basic info especially if that information is not obvious from the picture. Example: Artist - Title Format

Last night I busted out this behemoth of a box set...


Various ‎– Popular Electronics: Early Dutch Electronic Music From Philips Research Laboratories 4CD Box (1956 - 1963) Bosta 2004



^Not your average electronic music, this is lots of old experimental analog electronics from way back. Some of it is very organized like classical in a way, others just random space noises. Either way, for me it's the kind of sample library that goes a long way. It's not the kind of music you play unless you are doing something because some of it is just so creepy you'll bug out. I happened to be insulating the basement yesterday and this stuff is perfect for a job like that.

When I say behemoth of a box set, there's really only 4 CDs, and that goes a long way, but the thing is just packed to the brim with great writings, actual notes of the artists, theories, diagrams, dialogs, bios, posters, stickers, you name it, it's in there. I could spend 2 days just reading thru that stuff.

Highly recommended if you are an old knob and tube electronic fan.

Perfume Tree - Tide's Out EP, Feeler CD & Felt CD (World Domination Enterprises) (Minimum Records) 1997-2001

^Apparently the brainchild of a trio of Vancouver DJs, Perfume Tree had a very short run as a band. While this music style is basically long since dead, I never seem to get sick of this obscure vocal-centric trip hop\ambient\trance group that fizzled into obscurity like their label World Domination did at the beginning of the new millennium.

Upon first listen this may strike you as Enya tripping balls but hang in there, it's not as corny as that. The duo of female vocalists in this band have a perfect harmonic balance, with long, wispy sustain that can fluctuate between haunting and heavenly. The ambient electronic textures barely audible at first gradually build until they pair up with the singing. The beats are slow and driving, introspective and subtle-smart. Sometimes the beats are trip hop, other times drone like trance or ambient.

Ok, imagine Lamb, early Tricky, Portishead, Brian Eno, Throbbing Gristle, and Smith and Mighty all collaborating. That doesn't do it justice, but that's all I got.

I hesitate to post the YouTube songs of this band here because they are long and ambient and so many listeners will get impatient and fast forward this trying to get to the beat which doesn't kick in all at once. It's all about the slow gradual ambient build and the beat doesn't fully mature till about the 10 minute mark. This is better appreciated when you just push play and let it unfold naturally.





^One of my favorite tracks from Feeler, but that whole album is truly a perfect late night after party CD. Actually I think Feeler might be a good CD to take fishing, I can imagine the fish liking it. Felt is all remixes of Feeler, which are very nicely reinterpreted. They accomplished remixes that didn't reinvent the overall song, they just enhanced it with more upbeat rhythms.

If I had to recommend only one album out of these, I'd say start with Feeler, but IMO they all are really powerful, interesting pieces.
