Bill Barron - The Next Plateau LP

If you thought all jazz in the 80s sucked, here is proof that it didn't. Barron's work goes way back. He recorded some records in the early 60s, went on hiatus from making records for almost ten years, had very few albums in the 70s, then released this, his final album non-posthumous album in 1987, then passed away in 1989.

I guess this what people call "post-bop". Definitely coming from the hard bop tradition but doing some other things too, maybe just touching on the avant in places without being anything like free jazz. I don't have any of Barron's other albums but I'll have to hunt them down eventually. This is really nice, melodic but very interesting, some killer piano work here as well.

Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder LP

One of the most popular Blue Note albums, and one I'm sure everyone around here has heard at some point. I didn't grab this on vinyl until semi-recently. This is a 70s pressing with the Blue/Black label, but the important thing to note here is that it was pressed using old Van Gelder mother/father plates.

The way to check for this is to look carefully in the deadwax and see if the runout has a "VAN GELDER" or "RVG" or "RVG STEREO" stamped into the matrix. These are the 70s pressings you want and until recently it was not that hard to find them at affordable prices (i.e. $10-15) in VG+ or better condition.

You can still luck out and find them now and again but I've noticed stores have started jacking up prices on everything Blue Note related, even mediocre pressings and records in terrible condition. I refuse to take the sucker's bait so I've mainly gravitated toward CDs and the occasional audiophile reissue from Music Matters rather than shell out too much for these.

If you can find them at the right price in the right condition, grab them!

P.S. similar VAN GELDER stamped matrices are also on some old 60s/70s pressings of Verve, Prestige, and Impulse label records that are not first pressings and that collectors don't want. If you're buying records to listen to, those are also worth grabbing.

It was a popular album, I'm sure you'll come across one eventually.

If you get tired of waiting, just buy this:

Lee Morgan - Sidewinder - Music Matters 33rpm

Not cheap, but the quality of their releases is absolutely top notch, better than pretty much anything else out there.

Oscar Peterson & Clark Terry - Self-Titled LP

This is one of those mid-70s Pablo label LPs that you can pick up very cheaply. Although most of these tracks are standards you've probably heard before, the stripped down duo format here works really well.
