Neglect - Four Years Of Hate
Gain Ground, 1996



Neglect was a NYHC band that was active between 1991-1996. This comp collects a demo from '92 with two different sessions they did with Don Fury as the producer/engineer in '93 along with a live track. This is thrashy hardcore that's coming from the same sound space as Prong was before they got into their electronic/industrial phase.

The sound is excellent, much better than on the videos below. Big, booming and crunchy.

I remember seeing distro ads for this at the time, but never heard this band until now. Angry stuff. Reminds me of Negative Approach meets tough NYC hardcore.

Minutemen - The Punch Line LP



This could've easily been in the post-punk thread, but I thought I'd put it here instead since the Minutemen embody what is great about punk rock in so many ways. This was their first proper LP, but it's really a 45 12'' and blazes by pretty quickly. The trademark funk-inluenced/jazz-influenced punk rock is on full display here, and the songs are energetic and even quite catchy at times. Often I will reach for this one over Double Nickels, as great as that album is.

So true. Even after all these years, I can still pull out their albums and just melt into them. I only saw them play once, but I've had the chance to see Mike Watt several times. All killer shows. That dude has lost none of his punk attitude over the years.

Fugazi - Steady Diet Of Nothing

I'm sticking this here knowing full well that every time I mention Fugazi as a punk band, someone invariably will want to argue that they aren't really punk rock, but post-punk or post-hardcore or post-something else. Whatever.

This is one of my top-ten favorite albums by anyone, ever, and one of the ones I have gone out of my way to get on every format available in addition to making a hi-res FLAC copy of it and even ripping the damn thing to mini-disc back in the 90s. Every track on this just seethes with righteous fury. Yeah, it's a little more listener-friendly than the debut album, and it certainly lacks the angst ridden ethos of Minor Threat and Ian MacKaye's other earlier bands (all of them worth checking out), but the sparse instrumentation, the jarring, angular melodies, and the almost dub-style rhythm made this a pretty unique sound in 1991.

Even after 26 years of listening to this record, those opening notes of "Exit Only" get my blood pumping, and make me want to grab society by its sick throat and fuck some shit up. And that's the very definition of punk rock to me...
