Never heard of this band before, but those tracks sound pretty good. I'll have to look into them more. Definitely up my alley.

That Petrol Emotion - Manic Pop Thrill

TPE's first LP from 1986. This band was made up of two ex-members of the Undertones but sounds nothing like them. Instead of light punky power pop this is sort of the crossroads of 80s indie rock and post-punk. Some good songs, lots of melody, though not as aggressive as their next album, Babble. If you've never heard TPE, I'd probably recommend starting with that one first, as it's a bit easier to find in used bins and has a more immediate sound.

Skin Yard - Hallowed Ground
Toxic Shock, 1988

Long before some marketing douchebag made up the term "grunge", there were already a bunch of great bands in the Pacific Northwest making killer albums. Skin Yard was one of them.

Even though they didn't sell millions of albums like some of their contemporaries did, Skin Yard did spawn the careers of drummer Matt Cameron (who had moved on to Soundgarden before this particular album was recorded) and founding guitarist Jack Endino, who would go on to produce albums by most of the bands associated with the scene including Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Nirvana, Seven Year Bitch, TAD, Mudhoney, Babes In Toyland... You get the idea.

Check this one out for some of the best unsung music of the late 80s. These guys should be legends.

Sidewinders - Witchdoctor LP

Late 80s college rock from Tucson, Arizona. This was their second LP and seems to be something of a cult favorite in certain circles. The sound is similar to other American jangly guitar type bands from the era (e.g. Miracle Legion, Dumptruck, Guadalcanal Diary, etc.), but this band cranks up the energy and aggression a bit more often. There are also some desert themes in some of the lyrics, which I like. After this album, the band put out one more LP before changing their name to the Sand Rubies. This album is well worth checking out and rescuing from the used bins. You can probably pick up a copy of the LP for not much money.

Berlin - Pleasure Victim
Geffen Records / Enigma Records / M.A.O. Records, 1982

Awesome synthpop from the early days of the genre. You can hear the influence of krautrock artists like Kraftwerk on this album so strongly that back when I first heard this, I honestly thought it was a new release from some of the members of that band with a female singer before I found out who Berlin was. They would go on to have bigger hits than this, but I still enjoy this record more than any of their others. Well worth seeking out, and can usually be found for a pretty cheap price.
