XTC - White Music LP

XTC's first LP, very quirky new wave here, lots of high energy. Something I have to be in the mood for, definitely. A good album to put on when you need to wake up a little bit.

Steve Kilbey - Unearthed LP

Steve Kilbey's (lead singer/songwriter from The Church) first solo LP. Despite the very cheesy and dated looking album cover, this is mostly excellent. Compared to what the Church was doing at the time, this is a bit more stripped down and less slick, which isn't a bad thing at all. A few tracks use a drum machine, but it's no big deal. If you like the early work from the Church but would like a take on that sound somewhat similar to very well recorded songwriter demos, that is what you get here.

Unfortunately my copy has some kind of flaw which renders the first track unplayable due to a repeating skip. Tried multiple wet cleanings, no dice. Not sure this can be returned at this point either. really angry

Steve Kilbey - The Slow Crack LP

Second LP by Kilbey, this one is a lot more psychedelic and experimental, very different from what the Church themselves were doing at the time. As good as his first solo LP is, this one is probably a bit more interesting and unique, making it a better album overall.

Regarding White Music by XTC, It's a fine album musically but I just can't really enjoy it as much as their other stuff knowing that at that point they were still submitting to their label and trying to break into the charts. Whenever I think of early XTC in my head I associate them with Go 2 instead because it was clear not only from the music but even the album cover that they had begun to stop giving a crap and embrace their inner punk..

I don't think I've ever actually heard Go2. I know it's not well regarded by fans. In general, I really have to be in the mood for XTC and even their more popular stuff like Skylarking I don't really care for. For me the best album from them is English Settlement, followed by Black Sea. I also like Drums and Wires but probably listen to that one the least out of the XTC stuff I have.
