Difference Engine - Breadmaker LP



Posted about this before, but figured I'd post it again, now that I have the record instead of just the FLAC version.

This is sort of a lost classic of 90s American shoegaze. Musically it reminds me a bit of "Just for a Day" era Slowdive, but this is darker and less gauzy. Some of it also brings to mind 80s post-punk and 4AD style acts. At any rate, the album is great and I highly recommend. The vinyl is a nice pressing from GZ, I went with standard black because it was the cheapest. Some Discogs sellers are overcharging for this one, so I'd recommend buying directly from the label.

Difference Engine released a series of 7” records on La-Di-Da America and Swirling Worlds, leading to their debut release, Breadmaker in 1994, also on La-Di-Da America. The band then recorded a follow up record, but before it could be released, the band moved on to a different style. Therefore, the follow up was never released. Breadmaker became a much sought-after classic shoegaze record that now has been remastered and reissued on vinyl for the first time. Look for the long lost sophomore release to also be released on Saint Marie next year.

His Name is Alive - Frog and Toad - '92-'97 - Cassette Tape



Cassette tape of unreleased songs from HNIA, back when they doing dreamy experimental rock stuff on Rykodisc and 4AD. This was put out by the label Time Stereo, well known for experiment/noise/avant/general weirdshit. Even though many of these tracks are home demos and alternate versions, they mostly sound great. Probably not the best place to start for newcomers, but well worth getting if you are a fan and have a bunch of the studio albums already.

Deconstruction - Deconstruction
American Recordings, 1994



This is the one and only album released by this band. Formed by Dave Navarro and Eric Avery in the wake of Jane's Addiction, drummer Stephen Perkins was originally slated to be on this record, but opted to join Perry Farrell on the Porno For Pyros project instead.

These are mostly songs made up in the studio as they were recording. The Jane's Addiction sound is prevalent here, as is to be expected, but there is a lot of deep psychedelia too, with hints of everything from Syd Barrett to Berlin-era David Bowie. Navarro's guitar just rolls and crashes in waves throughout this album, while Avery and drummer Michael Murphy color the sound with solid rhythms and fills, and touches of strange electronics sprinkled around. Even though it clocks in at over an hour, this overlooked alt-rock masterpiece is worth hearing in one continuous listen.
