I've always thought that was weird about SPV. Like 99% of their releases are metal/harcdore/punk, but then they occasionally put out some country-rock/rockabilly/blues/ambient/techno albums. I'd love to be inside their A&R department.

For sure. I also like how they often keep older, non-brickwalled versions of metal albums in print on CD. I just wish they'd reissue the "correct" version of Sodom's first album on CD.

Grant Lee Buffalo - Mighty Joe Moon



Wasn't sure where to put this one, but decided to put it here. These guys were around in the 90s and are generally lumped in with the whole "alternative country" thing, which I guess makes sense, but there is more going on here. At times this vaguely reminds me of what later Screaming Trees would sound like if they turned down the guitars a little and were more country-influenced. Other times I'm reminded of singer-songwriter based bands such as American Music Club. At any rate, the album is well written and produced and probably deserves more attention these days.

Laura Jean - S/T LP



I guess you would call this "contemporary indie folk". Laura Jean is a singer/songwriter from Australia and this is her most recent album (from 2014), which was produced by John Parish. If you're thinking this is going to sound like PJ Harvey due to the Parish connection, forget it. This is a delicate, acoustic guitar-based record. There are some subtle arrangements on these songs though, so it's not a lo-fi affair even though it sounds quite stripped down. If you like this kind of music, give this album a shot. I took a chance on this one and was pleasantly surprised.
