2006 - Misra

I'm not quite sure if this should go here, but it's probably the closest fit. These guys are from Denton Texas and they sound like it. I suppose they would fall into the "alt country category" I first came across them back in 2003 when I used to swing by a local store every payday and hit up the 5 for $20.00 used cd deal they always had going on. I picked up their recently released album love you just the same (kick drum on the cover-I'm a drummer) and was a fan immediately. (The might midshipman is a brilliant track btw, again...the drums) anyway, they became a norm in my listening rotation. They would often come through my city and even got to have a few good conversations with Will. So along comes 2006 and this fine gem was produced. I picked it up and It has since had a good life at my house.

I don't listen to too much else in this genre, so I'll just say they throw together some elements of whiskeytown/son volt with some indie guitar driven stuff like superchunk let's say. Singer Will Johnson has also done a lot on his own with some other projects definitely worth checking out.

Rodney Crowell - Ain't Living Long Like This LP



Crowell's first album, often referred to as his best. I actually think Diamonds and Dirt tops it, but this a great album any way you look at it.

Last night...

Poco - Poco LP (Epic Records) 1970



^Just found out about this Southern Rock band from a compilation I got a while back called Truckers, Kickers and Cowboy Angels v.3. I wanted the compilation so I could learn more about this genre and even though that CD turned out to have a ton of flops on it, I consider it a huge mission accomplished because I learned about this great, cheap and easy to find rock band that I now love.

Anyways, after hearing that song I knew I had to hunt down the album it was on. Lucky me, I found it locally in my neck of the woods in top notch condition for a mere $2.84. Since I spend less on a good coffee this was my no-brainer purchase from last night.

Turns out the whole damn album front to back is great. It's funny how I've probably flipped past this record 100x in my local store not giving it even a pause and now it's one of the best Southern Rock records I have. I put this album at the same level as some of Lynyrd Skynyrd's and Creedence's best albums. Not loaded with monster hits like those big gun bands have, but just as good in a groovy-funky-bluesy rock kind of way. There's something very real and unpretentious about this music and I knew peeping it last night for the first time I had to share it here.

If you ever spot this cheap and you wanna fill your Country Rock holes up I highly recommend this album. Which makes me wonder, they have so many albums, and I've heard no others except this... Can anyone recommend any other albums of theirs I should get or avoid? I'm sure they can't all be this good but I want to dig deeper.

I've run across Poco stuff for years but never thought to pick any of it up. I know members of Buffalo Springfield were in that band, and that fans of stuff like the Flying Burrito Brothers sometimes dig them as well.
