Exactly. How many times have I flipped past Poco in my local store alone, hundreds? Never even gave it a second thought even once. So then I come to the sales counter with that $3 Poco in my hands, and the owner of the store, who knows me very well, gave me a look and said, "Really? You are buying Poco?" He had that 3 dollar Poco in that section for years now he told me that with a smirk. "I think it'll be good. " I said. "And for 3 bucks if I'm wrong, oh well."

I took a 3 dollar gamble based on the strength of that one song and I scored big. After listening to the album I'd pay 10 times that and not feel guilty.

It's great stuff, highly recommended pick up for any diggers low on cash who just need a quick 3 dollar vinyl fix that doesn't suck.

Nice find, rchecka - Jim Messina of Loggins and Messina was also involved. There's a ridiculous amount of excellent music produced in the 70s that's dirt cheap. My favorite 70s roots rock sleeper is Delbert McClinton - some of his records are pretty easy to find for less than a fiver.

^Good words man, agreed. Quite honestly I could use a lot more Delbert, I only have a few of his songs here and there.

Various - Unissued Rockabilly Acetates LP (Be Sharp Records) 2014



^Pretty self explanatory title, these tracks are all mastered from original acetates of unissued rockabilly records. After reading the title I had to jump on this. With these kind of comps you hope for the best but expect the worst. I buy these for educational purposes, I'm trying to get deeper into rockabilly and old ass country and this is about as random and deep as you can get.

Surprisingly this is pretty good. Unissued could mean it was unissued because of bad luck or unissued because the artist sucked. There is a little bit of both on this. Even the stuff that sucks is only cuz the singer is off beat or imitates Elvis to an embarrassing degree but even with those sucks the overall quality of sound and quality of the really good tracks makes up for the coin flip purchase.



Various - Six Feet Under LP (Mississippi Records) 2013



^Very generic cover, and I have a lot of these rockabilly comps that look super low budget and sound low budget but this is one of those don't judge a book covers. I'd say this is even better than the much better produced comp above this one, in terms of song quality vs sound quality this one wins. Double thumbs up for this one.

Recently...

Link Wray - The Early Recordings LP (Ace Records) 1987



^One of those artists recently repopularized courtesy of Quentin Tarantino movies. As an artist I have been sleeping on, I'm glad I am finally delving into his earlier works. The way this guy plays the rockabilly guitar, even this early stuff is haunting, not in a dark way but in a moody reverb kind of way. These early recordings are all instrumental on this recent reissue. Not a bad pressing BTW, but I'm not sure about when or where this was reissued. Not that I care when it sounds this good.



Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant - 2 Guitars Country Style 10" (Capitol Records) 1954



^This one has been on my hit list for WAY too long. Speedy West was a legendary Steel Guitar player and what he did was and still is imitated for years. That long Hawaiian twang, the drastic bends, the dexterity of his strumming. Accompanied by Jimmy Bryant on electric guitar this short album is a perfect meeting of the minds. Lots of back and forth strut play, not strictly showing off play, but feeding off each other play. This old scratchy 10" was well worth the 30 bucks I spent having it shipped to my house. I usually see it for much more than that and have to pass on it, but this time I found the right seller.

Gradually I'm getting enough country and rockabilly to make another country rockabilly mix which I'm really looking forward to doing. I just love that old sound so much I may treat myself to finally compiling and mixing this over the holiday break.

^Very cool. I'm not up on Link Wray...one of those artists I've meant to check out for years but never did. That Speedy West looks interesting too, another one I know nothing about. IIRC Sundazed did a few steel guitar type reissues on vinyl in recent years but I never bought any of those.
