One of my favorite under appreciated blues guitarist's earlier albums...

Luther Allison ‎– Love Me Papa LP (Black and Blue) 1977



^One of the greats that was inducted into the blues hall of fame only after he passed away back in 1998. His style of playing the electric guitar is deeply dynamic, almost inaudible at times, and the kind of precision and passion that can't be faked.

Recently...

Albert King - I Wanna Get Funky LP (Stax) 1974



The other king of the blues (there are at least 3 big "kings" ) gets funky. About the time when Funk was everywhere King already had a knack for getting funky on his guitar so he might as well sell it. And that's just what he did on this funky blues album.

A lot of blues artists at this time were latching on to the whole funk "thang", like when Muddy Waters "put the Unk in Funk", and John Lee Hooker was dropping LPs like "Free Beer and Chicken" so of course Albert had to get his funk on too.

And it's just that. Funky but not forced, not funky for funk's sake but funky for the blues sake. Still as real as the blues ever was, not just a funk fashion statement of an album.

^I love his very distinct "warmth" sound of the way he plays his guitar. That guitar tone is very warm and his own signature sound, and a lot of players in the past and still today try to imitate.

Lightnin' Hopkins - Blues in My Bottle LP



Acoustic guitar-based blues from Lightnin' Hopkins. The recording on this one is a little hot in terms of the microphone levels that were used to capture these performances, so the album is a bit more exciting and raw sounding than you might expect. I don't really know much about Hopkins TBH so I have no idea if this is among his best work or just an average album by him. I do like it though, and would be interested in picking up more albums by him down the line.

This is one of the those newer Prestige label reissues done under the auspices of Concord Music Group, the same parent company behind the current Original Jazz Classics pressings that you see in stores. The pressing on this one is average, done by Rainbo. As with most of these newer blues and jazz pressings on Concord (unless deadwax or other info confirms otherwise) the source used for cutting this pressing was probably digital.
