^That is a good question. One could argue that in terms of punk bands that tread the power pop line, it really has to do with the band's image or how they were marketed by the label. In general, the pure power pop bands tended to be more polite and didn't play quite as loud and fast. But then you have the New Wave power pop stuff that is often punky in its energy level (i.e. certain albums by people like Elvis Costello or even Joe Jackson). I think the power pop purists would argue that a band crosses the line when they play louder and faster than Big Star did. They want everything to sound the Raspberries (a pretty tame, polished band IMHO) or whatever.

Shoes - Present Tense LP

Shoes' first album on a major label, a bit more sugary and slick compared to their famous "Black Vinyl Shoes" LP. Still a solid album with catchy songs that is well worth grabbing. Found this as a sealed cutout recently for a cheap price and couldn't pass it up.

T.Rex - Electric Warrior LP [2017 "Roctober" U.S. Rhino Reissue]

So everyone knows this record and probably has multiple copies on some format. Do we really need another reissue of it? In this case, the answer is yes, mainly due to how this was done. The lacquers were cut by Kevin Gray straight from the analog master tape and the record was pressed at RTI. If you don't who Gray is - Google him - one of the preeminent vinyl mastering engineers today. RTI is the same plant that presses records for Music Matters, MOFI, and a bunch of other audiophile labels. Now, RTI has hit a rough patch in the last year or so according to some people but this record was pressed very well, at least my copy was. The LP jacket is very nice as well - it's a heavy gatefold with tip-on printing.

I highly recommend this reissue - pick it up before it before it sells out. It's part of the "Roctober" series Rhino did last month that is supposed to only be sold through indie record stores. If you go shopping look for the hype stickers on this one. There are other reissues done in recent years that some stores may still be stocking and those aren't done to the high standard of this one. Also, I can't vouch for the entire "Roctober" series since it looks like they were not all cut by the same engineer and pressed at the same plant.

I need to keep an eye out for this pressing. Gray is an excellent engineer, and i love this album. One of the best from T.Rex.

Agreed. I wish Rhino or some other label would issue some other T-Rex stuff done in a similar fashion, but the reissues I've seen don't credit Gray or appear to be done in a cheaper fashion.
