To say this album was not well received when originally released would be something of an understatement. The reviews were poor, and sales were abysmal. However, like most of Young's 80s output, it is well worth tracking down and deciding for yourself whether or not it's your thing.

There are forays into electronic music here, with Young using a variety of synthesizers and a vocoder on some tracks. The record was such a departure from his usual, albeit varied, music that when his popularity reached new heights in the post-grunge 90s, Geffen didn't even bother to reissue this particular album in the US, hence the UK notation for the CD above.

Personally, I love this album. It's great music for 2:00 AM cruising along the foggy beach roads around my house, and provides a surreal, retro-futuristic soundtrack for those late night drives.

^I've never been a fan of Neil Young. I appreciate his talent and his mark on rock but his voice has been a turn off for me since I first heard it. That said, I do like that album and those kind of WTF excursion albums in particular.

Interesting stuff. I've never had a copy of this and I like Neil Young, though I will admit I never got into much of his stuff after his 70s period. I used to see this one in the used bins all the time and a couple people I knew would mention that they liked it though a lot of people don't obviously. I think this one and the Leonard Cohen album with the heavy synths are maybe more appreciated today than when they were released.

So I'm technically not listening to this right now, but played it earlier today. This is a phenomenal album that fuses industrial, politically charged hardcore punk, and rap into a vicious mix. I just got turned on to these dudes a few weeks ago, and immediately ordered this LP from the band's website. This is definitely one of my favorite new discoveries of the year.

Azar Lawrence - Bridge Into the New Age LP

I got into this artist while digging at one of my favorite local shops a few years ago. They had a mint promo copy of his second album, "Summer Solstice" on the wall and I was immediately drawn to the psychedelic cover, never having heard a note of the music. I think I checked out a quick soundclip on my phone and immediately bought it. Since then I've been trying to find a nice copy of his first album (this one here) without much luck for the condition and price I wanted to pay. Thankfully Jazz Dispensary reissued this album, so now I have it. They did a really nice job also - tip on cover, pressed at QRP, and lacquers cut by Kevin Gray.

Musically this is a bit different than his second album. While that one has some latin and Brazilian touches, moments of post-bop and free jazz, this one is more along the lines of the type of spiritual jazz you might find on labels like Black Jazz and Strata East. Jean Carn even does vocals on two of the tracks. Anyway, this is a great album, and if you like 70s jazz it's a no-brainer to pick this one up.
