Joe Simon - Drowning in the Sea of Love
Spring Records - US, 1972

Joe Simon's backed by MFSB in a Gamble & Huff production. This is a great example of early 70's Philly soul. Simon's voice is fantastic and unique, and the frequently lush production suits him well. Definitely more here than the hit the record's named after - every song's worth a listen. My favorite's the closer:

^Very cool. I always thought Joe Simon had a very underrated soulful voice.

Gave Radio Birdman a listen today - it's one of those bands that sounds deeply familiar even though I'm sure I've only heard one or two tracks before. Thanks for this post - fun listen!

Now that you heard Birdman check out the erotic funk stylings of Birtman! thumbs up

Not familiar with this at all, but it sounds quite good. I should buy more Philly soul stuff - my knowledge of it is fairly limited.

Love and Money - Strange Kind of Love CD

Late 80s sophistipop from Scotland. This band has ex-members of the jangle pop, Orange Juice-esque group, Friends Again, but really sounds nothing like them. Instead there's a bit of blue eyed soul, some lite-funk, and some smooth rock/pop sounds. There is a slight dark edqe to some of the music which I like. The overall vibe isn't quite as "pretty" as say the Blue Nile or Prefab Sprout. Also, this album was produced by Gary Katz, the same guy that produced all of Steely Dan's pre-reunion records. I'm not detecting a whole lot of Dan influence here, though the production job is very polished (it's a DDD recording).

Here's a horrible quality video of the title track that I found YouTube.

Another track.
