Miles Davis - Live Around The World
Warner Bros. Records, 1996

This album was recorded live at some gigs that took place between '88-'89. The CD in the photo is actually from the 2015 "The Last Word" box set, but is available on its own for a pretty cheap price.

I love this period of his career. I think it's a perfect blend of the cool jazz he pioneered in the 50s and the fusion era that started to take off around the time he recorded In A Silent Way. The version of "Time After Time" below is one of my personal favorite recordings of his.

Chicago - 17
originally released by Warner Bros. Records, 1984 - this CD by Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, 2011

I just love Chicago. All the way from some of the crazy guitar freakouts on their very first LP up through the current lineup's syrupy ballads. This album here is one of the ones that there was just no escape from back in the mid 80s. It's packed full of the sappy love songs the band had so many hits with back then, and the MoFi treatment just serves to pump up the cheesy goodness to almost unbearable levels.

Boston - Third Stage
originally released by MCA Records, 1986 - this SHM CD by Geffen Records Japan, 2011

So I've been stuck on this 80s kick lately it seems. I love this Boston album. It doesn't quite reach the heights of their first album, but it does stand up well on its own despite the fact it can come off as a little cheesy. This SHM CD is well mastered, too. Not overly compressed or redlined like some of the earlier CD pressings were.

Armageddon - Self Titled LP

70s heavy hard rock with some prog touches featuring Keith Relf on vocals. I'm a big fan of Keith's vocals in the Yardbirds and this was one of the last things he recorded before tragically dying of electrocution. If you like 70s hard rock, this album is well worth seeking out and does a good job of balancing the hard and heavy stuff with the progressive sections. I'd been looking for a good copy of this album for a few years until it popped up in the dollar bin at a local shop recently. It's not rare or anything, just not something I come across regularly in the right condition.

Richard Williams - New Horn in Town LP

An overlooked gem from the golden era of sixties hard bop. Williams played with a number of big names but this was his only bandleader album. His trumpet is mixed front and center and almost overpowers the other players at times but it works fairly well. The tunes are a mix of standards you've heard before along with a few originals. My copy is a 1977 stereo reissue on Barnaby label that sounds great.
