Melt Banana - 13 Hedgehogs (MxBx Singles 1994-1999)
A-Zap Records, 2005

CD compilation that pulls together tracks from this Japanese noisecore band's first thirteen singles, EPs, and split releases. There's some pretty far out stuff happening in these tracks, none of it very pretty, but totally interesting for fans of noise rock and grindcore.

Saw this band live many years ago and they were great. I don't think I've ever owned anything by them. What would you say are their best releases in your opinion?

John Coltrane - Kulu Se Mama LP

My lone LP find from digging the other day at a very frustrating shop. Quite a few things I would've bought but everything was either overpriced or had condition issues.

Not one of Coltrane's albums that gets a ton of praise in the mainstream press, but it's a great album. The whole first side is taken up by a free form spiritual jazz suite. On side 2, things veer into noisy free jazz before closing it out with a more melodic piece. It sounds like this wouldn't all fit together that well but it actually works. This copy is an early 70s pressing on Impulse/ABC, cut by RVG.

Their best studio stuff in my opinion is probably Scratch Or Stitch and Teeny Shiny. I really like these singles comps, though. They've done so many 7" releases and tracks for compilations that it's kind of cool to hear that stuff collected in one place.

Scanner - Hypertrace LP

Here's one I've been listening to a bit lately. The cover would have you think it's some kind of 80s heavy metal album and that's right, but it's not thrash like you'd expect. Instead it's more of a melodic speed metal style, perhaps reminiscent of Running Wild if they sang about space and aliens instead of pirate-related topics. It can be a bit corny at times but I love it. My copy is a recent reissue by Music On Vinyl that sounds very nice. According to MOV and the rights holder it was cut (via DMM) from a hi-rez copy of the master.
