Rchecka, I can be quite "rock snobbish" as well and avoided Elvis for all the reasons you mentioned, just came off as corny to me more than anything. My opinion on a lot of stuff has changed over time, including the Beatles and even stuff like Frank Sinatra and Dusty Springfield. I like a lot of different stuff nowadays and have a much more open approach to music than I did wby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Elvis is a curve ball, hahaha. Honestly I never thought too much about him until I saw his '68 comeback special video. I'd recommend that to anyone really. As far as his music goes, I do think he was a little watered down and commercial compared to early rockabilly guys like Buddy Holly and Carl Perkins. That said, he did record some good music and was a massive influence on so mby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Impulse buys here, don't think I have to say too much about these. Both are recent reissues that can be picked up at reasonable prices.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
The Chameleons - Script of the Bridge One of my personal favorite albums. 80s post-punk with existentialist-inspired lyrics. This is a 2012 reissue on 2xLP that was mastered at Abbey Road. All older pressings got it wrong by trimming songs from the album or trying to cram too many songs on 1 LP.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Re: Sonic Youth, I tend to think their best stuff was in the 80s and the quality (or more accurately what I find personally appealing) drops off quite a bit after that. The only album of theirs after the 80s that I really like is Washing Machine. Some of their later work is just horrendously bad, IMHO. Rchecka, Do you the s/t album by Liaisons Dangereuses? They were one of the earliest and best EBM bands, and their LP has held up very well. There was a reissue last year that I bought. It's been in and out of print for years, so I'd grab it soon if you don't have it.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
@Rchecka, I'm a big fan of Skinny Puppy, but their post-reunion recordings have done very little for me. I guess from my perspective, the band sort of ended after Last Rights. Kinda hard for them to top that album or Too Dark Park, which remains my favorite. I like pretty much all their old output though. Modern Eon - Fiction Tales One of the greatest and most overloooked post-punk LPs of the late 70s/early 80s. Never got legitimately reissued on CD either. Has a relaxed spacey vibe and the vocalist is somewhat unique for this type of music. Had to rebuy this because I've been without my old LP copy for over a decade...by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Some stuff I've been listening to recently: Dwight Yoakam - Original Album Series This guy was a breath of fresh air for country music in the 80s and 90s. I liked him back then, but never had anything by him until recently. This budget CD set has his first five albums, and they're all pretty great. Hardly a bad song in the bunch, just as much rockabilly flavor going on as Buck Oweby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
I found out about Magazine through Devoto's association with the Buzzcocks. You probably know this already but he was their original singer and recorded an EP and an unreleased demo LP with the band before they really took off. What sucks is that Magazine on vinyl isn't that easy to find in my area. When I do see it, it's overpriced. I'm not paying for a scratched up recorby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
I've never really listened to Adamson's solo stuff, but that Magazine record is a huge favorite of mine, and my favorite from the band. Their second and third albums are also great. Mine are all CDs though, no vinyl. I passed up a U.S. LP copy of the second one at local store recently...too many scratches and they wanted too much for it.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
One of the most unique and greatest punk-related albums ever made IMHO.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
I think the only hip hop tapes I have are a couple of Mystik Journeymen cassettes I bought about five years ago when an online store was clearing them out. I've probably got 20-30 tapes total, most of them are punk or noise/experimental type stuff.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Hip Hop
@ Beatlover, that's too bad. Wasted talent I guess, if that really is the case. I'll probably hold off until some reviews come in and I have some time to check out some of it. I rarely pre-order stuff anyway.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Hip Hop
No problem. I can hold onto the records I want to give out for a little while. If no one responds to this after a week or two, would you be okay with me just creating a one time giveaway thread for them?by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
The Cedric Brooks 2xLP is really good. They cover a lot of music ground on that one too.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Obscure, goth-folk LP from 80s Detroit. Had been looking for this for awhile, was surprised to find a copy out in the wild. Been meaning to check out this band for awhile. I guess this is sort of "punk" but sounds more like high-energy rock 'n roll than anything else. They cover the Who and the Mysterians on here.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Quoterchecka Right now I'm bumping this track from the upcoming Pete Rock's Petestrumentals 2 Pete Rock - Heaven & Earth How is that? I love the first one.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Hip Hop
Hi Rchecka, Other people may have different opinions on this, but I never expect anything in return personally. What I do expect is that if someone takes a PIF, they pay it forward by putting a record in the PIF pot for *someone* to take. Most PIF threads I've seen work on the honor system. On some boards, someone that doesn't check in all time may forget it's time for them to pby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
@jaybrown, RE: the Gun Club, can't remember if I've said this before, but I think mid-period/later records like Mother Juno and Pastoral are just as good, if not better, than the debut LP.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Saw this yesterday. A monumental and controversial figure for sure, didn't really give up the avant garde stuff even later in life. What are your favorite Ornette albums? I don't have that many, a couple on vinyl and a 5xCD budget boxset thing.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Up to you. I kinda think PIF is the safest way to go. Can't have too many issues if you are getting a record for free? I'm not interested in sales at all and don't have the time to do proper trading ATM. The biggest issue with PIF will be getting folks to participate. Even on high-traffic boards there are times when there are sometimes lulls. Whatever you decide to do letby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Basically, I was thinking a PIF thread like on another board. Ex: I list the record(s) I want to give away (no thrift store stuff) and someone can PM me to claim a particular record. I ship it out CONUS media mail. After they receive the record (on the honor system) they put up a record to PIF to another user. They don't necessarily have to offer me a record, but they should offer a rby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Anyone up for a PIF thread here? I usually do my PIFs on another board but I thought I'd offer them here to get more activity going. This would be CONUS only for obvious reasons.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
I don't know much about Mitty, but she's got a great voice, perfect for this type of R&B. This is her first LP, originally released in 1965. There are some strings and such on this album, but they don't detract too much from the power and feel of the songs. This particular pressing is some kind of latter day reissue from a few years back, but I don't have any more infoby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Eric Dolphy - Conversations Might be heresy, but I probably like this more than Out to Lunch.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Gun Club - Fire of Love (Munster Reissue) Haven't put this on in a good bit. My copy needs another wet cleaning I think. In the last year I've been more into the later Gun Club LPs like Mother Juno and Pastoral, but this is a great debut full of raw energy.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Miles Davis - Miles Smiles I think everyone here probably knows this album. Nice pre-electric Miles, fairly mellow.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
@jaybrown, thanks for the kind words.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
I'm a big Eno fan as well, though nearly everythng I have is on CD. The only vinyl I have is a reissue of 4th World. I think Eno was a gateway for a lot of people into Krautrock, German Synth stuff, etc. Just like Bowie's Berlin albums and the Talking Heads made certain people look into Eno more.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
