Louis Armstrong - Hot Fives And Sevens 1999 - JSP Rcords UK Finally got around to replacing my old Columbia Jazz Masterpieces Hot Fives And Sevens with this very highly regarded 4 CD box set. No doubt about it, the mastering by John R.T. Davies (apparently a legend in the small world of 78 sourced mastering) is a big improvement on the old Columbia discs. I know some people have a hard tiby whyaduck - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
^ I like it - that's some catchy stuff. Definitely a step above most of the pop-punk bullshit that was getting churned out in the late 90's, early 00's. Shame they came to such a tragic end.by whyaduck - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Raspberries, T-Rex, Roxy Music, Big Star - you get the picture. Here's the first shot: Flamin' Groovies - Now 1978 - Sire US Now is split about equally between covers of mostly lesser known British Invasion songs (Paint It Black notwithstanding) and original material. While they can't equal the perfection of "Shake Some Action" - can that be a surprise? - Now is aby whyaduck - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Juicy Lucy - Juicy Lucy 1970 - ATCO Records US The aural equivalent of stepping in deep, thick, dark mud in bare feet - dirty, gritty, gooey, more than a whiff of funk. Thick, bluesy, groovy stuff - definitely some New Orleans rhythm going on here. Link to the full album - be sure to check out She's Mine, She's Yours, and Are You Satisfied - the latter sounds like they're cby whyaduck - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Terry Allen - Bottom Of The World 2013 - TLA U.S. Terry Allen is one of a generation of outsider country artists from Lubbock, Texas. His contemporaries include Joe Ely and Butch Hancock. A sculptor and professor by day (here's an example of one of his commissions), he's a decidedly outside of the mainstream country artist. His 1979 LP Lubbock On Everything is a bona fide masterpiby whyaduck - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Wilson Pickett - It's Too Late 1963 - Double-L Records USA (Mono) Wilson Pickett's sole release on Lloyd Price's Double-L Records, released a year or two before he joined Atlantic and started churning out classic after classic. Many of the songs on this record have R&B and Doo Wop style arrangements rather than his later deep soul style. While the later Fame sides are inby whyaduck - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop

Tangerine Dream - Stratosfear 1976 - Virgin (West) Germany I like the mix of more traditional instrumentation with (then) cutting edge techniques and instruments on this TD record. Nice variety here, from the classic soundtrack style of the title cut to the quiet, evocative 3 A.M. at the Border of the Marsh From Okefenokee, which has a bit of Morricone in it.by whyaduck - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteLionsMouth ^Where do you find this stuff?! I don't think I've seen a single jazz LP by a Japanese artist other some free-jazz/skronk type stuff that gets lumped in with the avant/noise section on rare occasion. I bought a number of their albums from a seller in Japan a while back. They ended up costing a bit over $20 per disc including shipping and they are absolutely pristine. I'm only familiar with Deep End and the s/t release - I think they're both worth picking up, but the self titled disc is usually under $5, so if you see it in good shape, grab it. The self titled is a bit more polished and pop, but Boston's vocals add almost a goth touch. Deep End isn't as commercial sounding, but Jeff Calder's putting in vocal duty on many of the cuts,by whyaduck - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Toshiko Akiyoshi Lew Tabackin Big Band - Kogun RCA - 1974 Japan Post Ellington big band that toured through the 1970s into the 1980s and ended up in residence in New York through 2003. Not a nostalgia act, Akiyoshi is an exceptional pianist, and a sophisticated composer, adept at blending styles from her native Japan with swinging post bop jazz (I wish I could find a video of the title sonby whyaduck - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
The Swimming Pool Q's - s/t A&M - 1984 US Alt power pop? Power jangle pop? Indie jangle rock? This is a great listen that seems to sit on the edge of several genres. A later member of the 80's souther alt rock cohort, they're more dB's than R.E.M. or Pylon. The Q's songs are literate and evocative, and they back them up with solid musicianship, especially the guby whyaduck - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Marlin Greene - Tiptoe Past The Dragon Elektra - 1972 US Marlin Greene was a producer, writer and session musician, among other things (he played guitar on Percy Sledge's When A Man Loves A Woman). This is his only LP - recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio with a few of the Swampers, it's a soulful country/folk rock disc. Pylon - Gyrate DB Recs - 1980 US Pylon was a 4 piece art rock band from Athens Georgia. Contemporaries of R.E.M. and the B-52s, they're largely forgotten, but they left behind 3 excellent albums. Gyrate was their debut LP. They (or their label) referred to it as "guitar based dance music", which isn't really a great description. QuoteLionsMouth PJ Harvey - Dry CD Not quite as monumental as her next two albums, but this is still damn good. No idea if a high quality vinyl reissue of this has been done in recent years, but if not, someone should step up and do it. Lindisfarne - Nicely Out Of Tune 1970 - Charisma UK Debut album from Brit folk rockers in the vein of Fairport Convention and Fotheringay, with a bit of late British Invasion flavor thrown into the mix. They do some great harmonizing and the songs cover a nice range; beautiful ballads, boozy sing-alongs and Celtic tinged bar rockers are all represented.by whyaduck - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Nice pair of records, LM - thanks! The Terry Huff disc is available on Spotify - listening to it right now. Smoooooooth. @Lionsmouth - There are better ways to get the music on that record. Wolf was a singles artist until the late 60's - the rockin' chair record's a compilation of Chess singles. $1k's way too much for me, too - if I thought I could get it in the low 100's I might seriously think about it. But only because this was the first records that I heard that introduced me to music outside of the lowest common denominator, mainstream FM music.
