I second Dusty Groove. The downside to the store is that there's a lot of stuff that's packed away in a warehouse. If you see something you want online, they may be able to arrange for pick up or send it wherever you need it to go. I haven't been to any of the Reckless stores in a few years so I have no idea how they are now. That's the biggest local shop in Chicago AFAIK.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Quotewhyaduck Hi all - it's been a while. I hope everyone's doing well. I slowed down my collecting while I was busy with other things, but I've been back to my old haunts over the past couple of months, so I thought it'd be good to share with you. Right now I'm listening to: Freddie King - Burglar RSO Records, 1974, USA I picked that album up a couple yearsby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Sleep - The Sciences 2xLP New album from this semi-legendary band. I took a chance on this one and was pleasantly rewarded. If you've not heard it, ignore the hype and check it out. Although I can't say at this point if it tops their first two classic albums it is very good. This is also my first record (IIRC) pressed at the new TMR plant. They did a good job with this one.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
The Cure - Pornography LP A record that probably doesn't need much explanation around here. Although not my favorite album by them, it's one that had a lot of stereo/headphone time for me over the years, even though I don't put it on as much as I used to. For years my only copy was the 80s Elektra CD until I came across this UK Fiction copy in very nice shape at a local shopby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
^Part of the fun of digging, running into something unexpected or a record you've been wanting for years but haven't found in the wild up to that point...I've not heard that album but the artist seems to be a name I've seen around here and there. I'll have to look into it.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Kawir - 5xCD Boxset CD Boxset from this Greek black metal band, covering pretty much everything they recorded from 1993-2015. Like some other Greek bands, this isn't raw purist black metal but rather a more melodic, epic take on the genre. This was also released as a vinyl boxset but it's sold out now and quite expensive. You can still buy the band's two most recent LPs (thaby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
^ Those all look interesting. I definitely need to buy some Gizzard albums when I can. Not familiar with the other bands, other than AMT, which I don't own anything by. Their catalog is indeed huge and I guess that has made it hard for me to decide on an entry point.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Quoterchecka ^Very cool. So much stuff in Japan to check for this is certainly one of them. Impex reissued some other Japanese jazz albums I would love to get, but they are very expensive 2xLP sets. They compiled three of them in this box set:by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Golgothan Remains - Perverse Offerings to the Void This death metal band from Australia doesn't really break any new ground, but they get a lot of things right where other bands fall short. Heavy as hell but the guitars on this album shine because rather than just playing pummeling riffs they focus quite a bit on creepy melodies and discordant sections. I also like that the vocals are verby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Badfinger - Wish You Were Here LP Not a rabid fan of this band, but I dig Straight Up a lot, and this is probably my second favorite after that one. It's a bit mellower in places and not as upbeat as that album, heavy on some Beatle-esque moments here and there even though this is clearly a product of the 70s, not the 60s. Unfortunately I have very mixed feelings on this Rhino reissueby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
^It's funny to think about how many live boots there were made in the 60s and 70s. I'm sure a lot of that stuff has never been reissued either.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Shoji Yokouchi Trio + Yuri Tashiro - Greensleeves LP Japanese guitar jazz from the 70s with a highly polished feel. If you like CTI stuff you'll be at home with this though this avoids a lot of the syrupy arrangements on some of the not so hot CTI albums. It's almost too pristine in a way, but repeated listens show this has soul too. I should also mention this reissue on Impex Reby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Nice, always feels great when you find a deal like that.by LionsMouth - PIFs Trades Wantlists and Sales
Not a screaming deal but Velted Distro is having a 15% off sale if you email your list of stuff you want direct to them. Reliable place of old punk/hc reissues and contemporary Japanese and non-U.S. hc/punk that I use from time to time. Velted Regnub Distroby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa I need to keep an eye out for this pressing. Gray is an excellent engineer, and i love this album. One of the best from T.Rex. Agreed. I wish Rhino or some other label would issue some other T-Rex stuff done in a similar fashion, but the reissues I've seen don't credit Gray or appear to be done in a cheaper fashion.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Gene Harris Trio - Genie In My Soul LP So here is an interesting album I picked up on a whim. Rather than the more well-known Gene Harris from the Three Sounds that recorded for Blue Note (among other labels), this Gene Harris is a white guy that attended Julliard and some other highbrow music schools. Searching online, there is next to no info available and both this LP and another one onby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Quoterchecka ^Very cool, I like that. Jazz Dispensary is on fire right now, check out any of their releases. I think I have about four of them now.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Azar Lawrence - Bridge Into the New Age LP I got into this artist while digging at one of my favorite local shops a few years ago. They had a mint promo copy of his second album, "Summer Solstice" on the wall and I was immediately drawn to the psychedelic cover, never having heard a note of the music. I think I checked out a quick soundclip on my phone and immediately bought it.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteSeith I was directed to this forum from the cratedigging.co instagram account. I've been a record collector since 2000, and have been fascinated with mixing and finding good grooves on wax. Fell in love with hip-hop at an early age, which was a gateway to all other kinds of music. Also, I'm a lover of a good scratch, and am not afraid to get fingerprints on records from time toby LionsMouth - General Discussion
Really enjoyed this mix, thanks for putting this together to educate the DNB neophytes like me.by LionsMouth - Member Submissions
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa Don Cherry / Latif Khan - Music/Sangam Europa Records, 1982 Those clips sounded really good. I need to check out more Cherry stuff in general. I probably have only 1 or 2 of his solo albums.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
T.Rex - Electric Warrior LP [2017 "Roctober" U.S. Rhino Reissue] So everyone knows this record and probably has multiple copies on some format. Do we really need another reissue of it? In this case, the answer is yes, mainly due to how this was done. The lacquers were cut by Kevin Gray straight from the analog master tape and the record was pressed at RTI. If you don't who Gby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa Neil Young - Trans Original release by Geffen Records, 1982 - this UK CD by Geffen Records, 1997 Interesting stuff. I've never had a copy of this and I like Neil Young, though I will admit I never got into much of his stuff after his 70s period. I used to see this one in the used bins all the time and a couple people I knew would mention that they liked it though aby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa QuoteLionsMouth Joe Bonner - The Lifesaver LP Solo piano jazz from the mid-70s, never reissued or released on CD either. Another underrated album on the Muse label, well worth picking up. There's so much good jazz out there that never made it onto CD. This is a perfect example. Such a great record. Yeah, one of the main reasons I still buy records. There is sby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa Summon - Dark Descent Of Fallen Souls original CD release by Grinding Peace Records, 1997 - this LP pressed by Werewolf Records, 2017 Not familiar with this band, then again I know very little about U.S. black metal in general. I'll have to check this out. Always cool to see obscure 90s extreme metal getting reissued.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa Paul Minesweeper - Last Frontier Black Mara, 2017 That looks cool. The packaging makes me think of old Zoviet France stuff or some of the things on the defunct Manifold label and Glass Throat (still active). Limited editions and special packaging used to go hand in hand with this type of music, not sure how prevalent it is anymore. This artist has popped up in my Bandcby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop

^That Dexter album is a classic. Along with "GO", probably his most well known album on Blue Note, though he recorded a bunch of good ones. Actually he was still recording strong albums in the 70s also, some of which you can pick up very cheaply. I recommend "Stable Mable" and "Sophisticated Giant" if you run into those while digging.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Spectral Voice - Eroded Corridors of Unbeing LP Here is a metal album that's getting tons of hype right now. In this case, I think the hype is justified because this is a really good album. Musically it's a hybrid of death metal and doom metal that is very popular these days but it's so well put together I can forgive the lack of originality. There is a lot of personality inby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Snuff - Snuff Said... Originally released in '89 on the Worker's Playtime label, this band gained some popularity in the 90s for their tenure on Fat Wreck Chords (the label also reissued this one). I never gave them much thought in the 90s but this album is really good, rough-edged, melodic punk - exactly the type of stuff that would've come out on Dischord in the mid-80s.
