Gave Radio Birdman a listen today - it's one of those bands that sounds deeply familiar even though I'm sure I've only heard one or two tracks before. Thanks for this post - fun listen!
Now that you heard Birdman check out the erotic funk stylings of Birtman!
That's filthy.

Joe Simon - Drowning in the Sea of Love
Spring Records - US, 1972
Joe Simon's backed by MFSB in a Gamble & Huff production. This is a great example of early 70's Philly soul. Simon's voice is fantastic and unique, and the frequently lush production suits him well. Definitely more here than the hit the record's named after - every song's worth a listen. My fa

I was just listening to Atomizer the other night!
Powerhouse album.
Weird - that's the first time I've listened to that album in a few years!
I didn't know Electrifying Mojo's backstory - just read up on him. Spotify's great, but programming driven by someone with great taste can't be replaced by algorithms. I need to find something to repl

Big Black - Atomizer
Homestead, 1986, US
Early Steve Albini - frantic, turgid, violent, frequently incomprehensible. Worth a listen after you turn off the news.
And I love that cover. I'd love to join the Midnight Funk Association.

I picked that album up a couple years ago based on the cover alone. I can't say how good it is in relation to his other stuff as I don't own any of it but I dig that one quite a bit.
Great cover - it looks like it should be painted on the side of a vintage Chevy van.

Reckless stores the discs separately from the covers - I really didn't want to spend the time digging, go to the counter, look over the vinyl, rinse, repeat, so I was only there 10 minutes or so. The selection looked like it was pretty well picked over, but I think it would be a decent place to grab common stuff. Caveat - I only looked in the Soul/R&B section before I moved on.

Thanks for the suggestions. I couldn’t get out to Dusty Groove - just not enough time. I did stop in Reckless Records briefly, but didn’t find anything in my short visit.
The city’s fantastic - wish it hadn’t been so damned hot, though. Here’s a few pics:

I'm in Chicago for the long weekend - anyone have record store suggestions? Staying just north of Millennium Park near the lake. For once I plan to have some empty luggage space, so I should be able to bring a dozen or so records back with me. Any music venue recommendations would be great too.

^Agreed - I enjoy surprises like that.
Television - Adventure
Elektra - USA, 1978
Marquee Moon's the more influential album, but I really enjoy the laid back, melodic feel of Adventure. I think Carried Away is absolutely lovely and lyrical - it's my favorite track from this album.

Just found this in the new arrivals bin at a record store I haven't been to in a couple of years. I've been on the verge of buying it from the UK a couple of times, but I just couldn't find a seller with enough other records I wanted to justify the shipping costs. Given the surprisingly reasonable price, I actually thought it was the crappy US release, but I bought it anyways. I di

^ I love that Fenton Robinson album!
Hi all - it's been a while. I hope everyone's doing well. I slowed down my collecting while I was busy with other things, but I've been back to my old haunts over the past couple of months, so I thought it'd be good to share with you. Right now I'm listening to:

McCoy Tyner - Fly With the Wind LP
Like so much 70's jazz by the post-bop survivors, an overlooked, excellent album - thanks for putting it up! Just dropped a needle on my copy - I forgot how lush the arrangements are. In general, I believe all flautists should be shunned, but I'll admit to begrudgingly enjoying Hubert Laws on this one. In any case, it's a

Johnny Jenkins - Ton-Ton Macoute!
Atco Capricorn - 1970, US
Been awhile - hope you all are doing ok and enjoying the summer!
This is one you'll have to pry from my cold, dead digits - great southern-soul-funk-rock laid down by Duane Allman, Dicky Betts and the Swampers, among others..

Wow , some great posts lately !!
Last night I bumped an album from this year , but with a back in the day sound .
Florian Pellissier Quartet - Cap De Bonne Esperance 2lp . Beautiful modern jazz with a 60s / 70s spiritual sound . I typically try to find a little funk in my jazz albums , but this couldn't be any further from that with the exception of one track . Mostly laid

General Discussion
Jonathan Edwards - Honky-Tonk Stardust Cowboy
Atco, US - 1972
Took a flier on this while I was rooting around at Record High on Saturday - never even realized that Edward's first album included "Sunshine (Go Away Today)". Glad I grabbed it - nice, laid back record. Plenty of Bakersfield influence, although a song or two could have been written in Laurel Canyon and there are

I love when other music lovers dig out gems like the 34 tracks on this comp. Mostly Canadian First Nations artists, the songs range from traditional to singer-songwriter, psychedelia, folk, and more - a fantastically diverse and beautiful collection. All music that I

I needed an antidote to today's news - the "mambo-rhumba boogie thing" works pretty well. Excellent comp of some of 'Fess' earliest recordings - the liner notes place the sessions in 1949 and 1953.

All the records I've purchased new are pristine. Except the Bowie albums. They're scratched up, dust deep in the grooves - I lived with them playing constantly when I was in my teens. I think for the first year or two that I was buying records, the only artist in my collection was Bowie. I'm utterly gutted to see him go, but what a fucking exit. Thanks for the music, David!

Eddie Bo and Various Artists - In The Pocket With Eddie Bo
2008 - Vampi Soul, Spain
This is a collection of hard to find New Orleans soul and funk produced or performed by the late great Eddie Bo. Most of the early releases are mastered from vinyl, so sound quality's all over the map, but for the most part it's good or at least not terribly distracting. There are some real burni

Nice find, rchecka - Jim Messina of Loggins and Messina was also involved. There's a ridiculous amount of excellent music produced in the 70s that's dirt cheap. My favorite 70s roots rock sleeper is Delbert McClinton - some of his records are pretty easy to find for less than a fiver.

Sam & Dave - Soul Men
1967 - Stax, US
Not exactly a hidden gem, but I've got to put it up. Soul Man was the only hit off this record, but it's full of great songs. Hayes and Porter produced, the Memphis Horns and Booker T. and the MGs provide the backing - how can you go wrong? Here's a few of the non-hits:

Classic roots reggae from its heyday. The trio lay down some beautiful harmonies. Sly and Robbie kick in the rhythm.

Lou Miami & The Kozmetix - Lou Miami & The Kozmetix
1982 - Modern Method Records, US
I was tempted to file this under glam, because Lou Miami's attitude was definitely in that vein, but the music on the EP's 80's new wave pogo with a little proto-goth thrown in.

Hollywood Brats - Hollywood Brats LP (Cherry Red Records) 1980
This one is one of my favorite rock records in my entire rock shelf. In a way this could go under post punk too but like the New York Dolls, their outward persona is glam rockers.
