Well put everyone... I was always on board with the idea of mixtapes ....they always symbolized hip-hop coming full circle...MM claims none of it was done for profit and that Lf already had knowledge of the situation..whatever the case may be I just don't want any guidelines put in place that would stifle the artists. Sometimes when things like this pop off they have a way of trying to punish everybody because one person decided to be sheisty...

Finally read this article , and I guess my opinion kinda goes both ways. I have heard a ton of mixtapes where people rhyme over another artist's beat , no biggie . But , I believe that homage or not , you want to clear that with the original artist. It sounds like there was no attempt of that until after the fact . I feel like making a video on top of that is really pushing it . So yes , I think LF has a right to sue , but am also worried about what this is gonna mean for making mixtapes and hip hop in general if he wins . Its understandable why this is happening , but I think it would be better if it could have been settled in a different manner . Hip hop went through a similar ordeal with sampling , and I realize that this is not sampling at all , but I would hate to see this turn into that type of situation .

outside of the "mixtape" aspect (which some consider "unofficial albums")....this is pretty much almost the same situation as P.E. vs Madonna (back in the 90's) when she jacked the, 'Security of the First world" beat and used it on, "justify My Love". I remember Chuck D going to court to sue Madonna...but dont remember the outcome - (you'd have to do your own research to she what happened). old geezer

...because of my old, gereatric age - I'm also not sure what the defined loopholes is (on Mixtapes) with releasing joints without needing to have the samples cleared; or having (official) permission to use other peoples beats, without legal infractions..and a few other related loopholes.... - but i do think I remember that there is something defined along those lines.

but......I could be wrong though......((Crotchy))

@ uptownkid-Thanks! As I mentioned before the "mixtape" phenomenon while not new it has always been an integral part of hip-hop. I remember being a young girl at night fumbling with my boom box waiting to hear a freestyle of someone ill over anybody's beat...fast forward to today where artists use these tapes as a conduit to do a number of things, introduce themselves, challenge themselves, keep their product relevant etc...I totally get maintaining one's artistic integrity but if statutes all of a sudden are in place I hate to think what that might mean for this art form that I hold so dear (pardon my dramatics-lol) and seriously, who is really checking' for Mac Miller?
