Am I gonna have to take a second listen...? Maybe I can pinpoint exactly what it is that doesn't stand out to me...I always thought there was a lack of authenticity in her material..I 'll be back on this one...
she sounds good over a dope beat..., but over a mediocre-to-wack beat - it's not happenin'. It's kind of like playing to the level of your opponent....
^^^that sounds interesting...I listened to all the submissions in this thread and what I've always thought still remains. There is a lack of authenticity,and her delivery sounds perfunctory, she has no flava...I need flava -lol
I have no respect for Jean Grae she's too arrogrant and unprofessional for me.
I was at Paid Dues 2007,shes was on the bill for months and yet she didn't have a DJ! She showed up with cd and begged Mr Len (who was only there to DJ between acts not perform) to act as her DJ, since she didn't have one. She had a year to put together a show and with her contacts in LA she could easily found someone help her out. I 'm sure Babu or Rhettmatic would have hooked her up if she asked.
When she walked onstage she acted and even said she was the reason people came to show.....are you serious? A show with Brother Ali,Sage Francis,Atmosphere,Murs,Blackalicious,Cage,Visionaries,PIgeon John,Alchemist & Evdence,and she thinks anybody came to see her? Everybody on that bill put on a tight show except her. She can't perform worth shit , she's worse than Wu Tang.
Wasn't she on craiglist a year or two ago selling her services as emcee? A signed artist trying find work through craiglist? I suspect it's her attitude that has kept her from being nothing more than a over-hyped emcee. Talib should kick her to curb. She's not worth the hassle.
