Ok...so are Beef and battling synonymous? Or is battling under the general umbrella of Beef? Semantics aside, where would hip-hop be if Krs-One never made "The Bridge Is Over"? Or if Kool Moe Dee decided not to go against Busy Bee? Just trying to put things into a bigger perspective....hmmm

Basketball will always be basketball. The rivalries between teams like the Pistons and Bulls made it more entertaining.

I hear ya, it's like Hip Hop will always be Hip Hop
but the battles made it more entertaining.

That's interesting, because now you bring in another issue.
The seperation of Hip Hop time line.
Because in my era, 73 - 81..You did not have to have BEEF or hate your opponent
to take him on.You were just there to showcase that your skills was better than theirs.
We concentrated on rhyming more about self promotion than the degredation
of the emcee you were going against.

In the Golden Era and then on into the nineties. It was all about BEEF.
Almost every rap record was based upon stabbin' somebody with their nose bone
The manifestation of either studio created or actual personal beef through incidents
seem to have captivated the listening and viewing audience and consumers of the product.

With that said,I would have to say that Battlin' and Beef is actually two seperate things.
IMO.

Peace to yall.

Agreed.

Battlin and Beef are two separate things.

...the one thing I haven't seen/read/heard anyone say in this topic, yet...is that althought beef and battling are two different things....you can't have a battle without beef. Noone battles for the fun of it....unless it's staged - which some battles have been (past and present)...but who takes those things seriously. Yeah, folks may battle to see who's skill is better (whether on a b-ball court, on NBA LIve or on a microphone)...but the beef come into play when shit gets' personal, for whatever reason.

But for all intents and purposes, IMO = most battles happened because some beef had been started, by one or the other (or both)...now they battling - making diss records, going on radio shows dissing the other, name-calling, etc...

this can also apply to anything Graffiti.....breakdancing, etc.....neighborhood gangs....Israelis vs. Hamas...Greeks versus Egyptians whatever....

...power and dominance....

peace.

No doubt, Beef is definitely part of a battle, but unless they truly hate each other's guts, I think it's safe to say there's underlying mutual respect at times. The point of a battle is to dominate the other guy, emasculate him and out-wit him, but sometimes mutual crew-mates can battle each other just to polish their skills, get exposure, and money, all with a fake-ass mean grill and no real animosity towards each other. But like you said, that's when it's staged, and heads can see right through that.
