Last week's Friday Night... (catch up)

Friday Night Slept on HH Albums #13 -

Tha Mexakinz - Zig Zag LP (Mad Sounds) 1993

^Lucky #13 is a slept on Latino duo from Long Beach CA. This 1993 release "Zig Zag" got a little mainstream radio airplay upon release for their single "Phonkie Melodia." Yet other than that, their Motown Subsidiary "Mad Sounds" promo people let the album fizzle into semi forgotten obscurity, so this only saw a vinyl release as a plain green promo.

Regarding the music... Think back to 1993 beats. Now imagine chunky West Coast 1993 boom bap beats with a bilingual duo who flip back and forth between English and Spanish multiple times in the same track like an on\off switch without even a smidgen of a stutter. It's clever wordplay and sharp lyrics over nice, fat snares.

This is still a fairly cheap and easy to find LP and it never got the official picture cover LP pressing it deserved, so if you ever spot this plain green Mad Sounds cover in the field, it's worth the 5 bones someone's asking for it.

Unrelated: Mad Sounds produced a few note worthy 12" singles in the same plain green sleeve so don't flip past that green promo label too fast when you spot it digging.

Friday Night Slept on HH Albums #14

Da King & I - Contemporary Jeep Music LP (Rowdy Records) 1993

^Is it just me or was 1993 a very good year for Hip Hop?

I think this is easily one of the most slept on Hip Hop albums of all time. It's not rare, but it's hard to find in good shape because there's enough people that know that every single track on this LP is the joint.

Aptly titled, and I can't describe it better than "Contemporary Jeep Music", so I'll just leave it with this... If this is not already in your crates, there is a void that you didn't even know existed. If you spot this in good condition, I highly recommend you jump on it.

^Good words guys thanks. Yeah LM, definitely cop this. The only thing I don't like about the album is the skits, but whatever, that's hardly worth even mentioning. I think for the most part a lot of Hip Hop skits are pretty unlistenable after the first time since they are usually all about inside jokes about how bad another MC is.
