Hi everyone

I started a little column on another web site to explore the underground / indy hip hop of the 90s, trying to shine some light on the "classics" that are findable and affordable (it's all relative but we can all agree that 50$ is more affordable than 300$)

Rchecka invited me to join this board some i'm going to start with a recap of what i already came up with and keep this thing going.

Feel free to discuss your favorite artists, you don't have to limit yourselves to the ones i'm presenting here

The group is composed of Rayme Supreme and Big Cousin aka the Obvious Wonder. One's from NY, the other's from Philly. Big Cousin handles the production duty and both rhyme.
They were pretty close with the Juggaknots who intervened on a few of their releases. I also always thought that one of the 2 MCs sounds a lot like Breezly Brewin.
You can expect very solid productions, with that extra loop that will make your head bop. Both MCs are dope as well with different and complementary styles
They have around 6 releases, the ones i posted are the first 3 and the best ones imo.
They also have a featuring with a guy name Wisdom, the 12" is produced by the Obvious Wonder and got that Adagio! sound

Brainsick Mob


Brainsick Records

Brainsick Mob aka Brainsick enterprise is composed of Jack The Ripper (brother of Lil Dap of Group Home fame) and Blackstarr
They first appeared on Group Home's first album (Livin Proof), on the last track of the album: The Realness. They later released a 12" called East NY Theory with Lil Dap which established them in the scene. this record has been repressed a few times and is still banging 20 years later. After that they released a few 12" and a EP that never got an official released.
Their must have are East NY Theory, Mixmaster USA (white label only but that circulates more often nowadays than it used to, took me a while to track it down, had to trade a Mr Voodoo Lyrical Tactics for it), Playin For Keeps and the EP. They have 2 releases on their own label that are ok but not mandatory

Their style is heavily influenced by Premier in terms of beats. They both have nice flows and street oriented lyrics

Camouflage Large


Regulate

Loosely Wu Tang related (i've read this a lot but never seen concrete evidence that it is true), Camouflage Large released 2 12" in the 90s that are both essential. Both are straight NY hardcore boom bap records
Hitmen Holdin Steel / Cocbacda9 was released in 96. There are 2 pressing of this, one with a typo on the group's name (Camoflauge instead of Camouflage). Both pressings are great, and cocbacda9 is the winner here, if you've listened to some mid 90s mixtape, you're bound to know this song. It's pretty easy to find and doesn't cost much
Regulate was released a year later. For a while it was very difficult to find, it seems it is more accessible now. This EP has 3 songs, Regulate being the super hardcore one, Hear me out the club one and Heavy Hitters the soulful one (for lack of better words)

Today we have the Dysfunkshunal Family coming from Bushwick
Those guys had Wu Tang like potential: a producer making those super grimy beats plus rhyming and a bunch of dope MCs

Brooklyn, New York hip-hop crew Da Dysfunkshunal Familee (a.k.a. Civilized Savages / Armageddon Bodies) consisted of D-Rock, Brain Dead, Amayss, Crazy DJ Bazarro, DJ Primetime, Diverse, Migraine Insane and Rebel Rhyme. Da Dysfunkshunal Familee had released two records in 1994 and one in 1997 and had guested on the Fondle'em Fossils album on Def Jux records. Apart from those several releases and some elusive demo tapes from the late 80's there was little of their music commercially available. Da Dysfunkshunal Familee's significance in the New York hip-hop scene should not be underestimated. They had been making Hip Hop music since the late 80's and ran parallel (and often in competition) to Da Beatminerz' produced projects such as Black Moon and Smif-n-Wessun. While Black Moon were recording for Nervous Records, Da Dysfunkshunal Familee were dropping wax independently on Crazy DJ Bazarro's own label using their connections in the NYC music industry to get their voices heard. It is only now that they are getting props they were due 20 years ago.
