This time period was an oddball time, when Hip Hop forums were fresh, Napster still was a network of peer to peer mp3 sharing, labels like BBE were born... basically the Rawkus style of Underground Hip Hop, before Rawkus went under, before 9/11, but long after Golden Era and Mid School.

A Hip Hop resurgence for me, but for others not so much.

What's yer take?

What's your vote and why did you vote that way?

There was a lot of good music that came out of that era , some of my favorite joints. But , my personal favorite on the hip hop timeline is probably between '91-'96 .

Those are some good years...can really be looked at with two sets of eyes...commercial and the emergence of a new set of rappers/emcees, DJ's and producers. From the commercial aspect, DMX, Jay z, puffy/the Lox and eminem were establishing themselves as the rap music, heads Of state. Down south/crunk music was getting ready for thier (popularity) due...etc.

....but on the underground, many of the now known prolifics, started their come-up...(I.e, lootpack/madlib, jay dee/j dilla - slum village, company flow, little brother/justice league, the molemen, DJ qbert-invisible scratch pickles...the other various, Upcoming DJ crews, eternal reflection and all the rawkus related emcees.

I'd say that era was a combination of the bling-era, the dirty south, bounce/crank movement and the east coast/west coast indie movement.

...at least that is my remembrance of that time/era.

...I'd also like to add that, I feel the "backpack years" was really between 1992 - 1995 or so...

Yeah, I hear you on the dates, the backpack years is a pretty unofficial title for this thread, I used it haphazardly because that's when I personally rocked the backpack LOL. Still do sometimes.

I loved Hip Hop between 98-01 it seemed like the underground was blowing up. 9/11 definitely marked a noticeable turning point in Hip Hop too, it seemed to quell that whole 'sub movement'. But between 98-01 Mos Def was blowing up, Talib Kweli, other Rawkus artists... Your right, Q-Bert was DJ king back then, I guess in a lot of ways he still is but he was so fresh back then.

Personally, I thought Bling was everywhere, it was gettin on my nerves cuz my Mom even knew the term. I made peace with bling recently though, we're cool now since we both know I'll never rock it, I just can't be down.
