the number of extremely knowledgable cats that signed on and added to the chipher was surprising high and ultimately, is what built that spot....what kept it going were the characters that emerged....which ironically, is what did them in.

if vinyl collectors are your core target audience, then you need heads that live and breathe that life to speak on it....it's nice to have cats up in here that know music....but that's wholly different from the art of crate digging. It's a question of focus....those other sites had 1 main thrust as a foundation, the rest of the content was built around that.

these are two quotes I wanted everyone to zero in on if they can, because Brother Eyes, sums everything up with these two quotes. That just about covers any and everything involving whatwe been talking about.

Peace.

One more...RC that Summertime thread was just like DC said, the best of 2007.
It was at that point that OSHH had officially lost it's mind.hahahaha

Well put indeed! SPOT ON with the "That's what did them in" but I'd add their brand of "cleaning house" was the final nail in the coffin. But regarding "Question of focus" that's what's up too, cuz I'm on it with a brand new (not official periodic) homepage focusing in on cratedigging.

One thing that's important to note though. It's VERY important that the members do not have to feel like this is strictly for record aficionados. No one cares who has zero records and who has 10,000 records that is NOT the point. It's more about MODERN CRATEDIGGING, which is in simplest terms people who love music and want to discuss and learn about music. This encompases all mediums, Records, tapes, CDs, reel to reels, 8-tracks, mp3s, mixtapes, Edison cylinders, etc. It's ALL about the discovery of music through active member cooperation. No one cares if you buy your music on Itunes or at the local record shop as long as the music is good, right? Not to mention, NEVER sleep on the plethora of online only mp3s from DIY DJs, MCs, Producers etc, that stuff is unavailable anywhere else, and a lot of that gold never gets pressed on wax. That's modern cratedigging, if you fall into that category you are an asset to this place.

I fall into that category RC. I haven't collected a record since the great flood of 2009. Being that I DJ digitally, I scour the interwebs almost daily for music, but you know that.

I think we all can be a little intimidating to lurkers. If its a high school or early 20's cat checking us out, chances are they can't relate to the styles of music we do. While I think it's important to educate about the past, it's equally important to learn about the present. Some of us (if not most) automatically dismiss music from the radio, because we grew up with "The Golden Era", or "True School". To us, most commercial music is complete and utter garbage, it always has been. But why?

Rap that us in the 30+ age grew up with may still seem relevant and better, but I think it has more to do with the memories that we hold with the tunes we love, and we love those tunes because of the memories we have with them. I still listen to the song I lost my virginity to. LL Cool J's "Back Seat of My Jeep". I put it on repeat! Haha, real classy! double thumbs upBut that song is pretty garbage when I think about it. I always got hype when listening to Gangstarr and Wu-Tang. I was obsessed with the Wu in high school. I remember riding around getting high, rapping Po Pimp and Wanna Be A Baller the summer I graduated. That is what was popular back then.

I think that we need to embrace today's music (if we can, lol), and at least try to at least respect some of it. Am I saying that you should go out and listen to Lil Wayne? No, but to be honest, he has a couple songs I like (Flame on). Same with Drake. I actually like a lot of 2 Chainz. Does that make me a buster? Am I not a "True Head" cause I like Young Jeezy, or listen to B.M.F. by Rick Ross? Am I a sell out? I hope not, but really I don't care.

I'm a working DJ and I need to stay relavent to make money. I dig for brand new commercial Rap that I like, and grab some stuff I don't like but other people do.

We hear phrases like "YOLO" and cringe, but that is how the youth feel. That is how I felt for a long time. Most of us have families now, and don't think like that anymore, but to a 22 y.o. with no kids, that's life.........the world is even crazier now than it was when we were their age. Get it while you can.

I LOVE Boom Bap Rap, but I can still dig some 808 Dirty South, Top 40, Trap (both Electro Trap and rap Trap), grimey 2013 shit.

I think in order to get more people, we have to relate to more people. We need to come out of our shells, so others do the same. I would like to start some threads about more commercial pop Rap if it's o.k. I haven't yet, because I was/am worried that some respect might be lost, or that none of you could relate or care to learn (if you don't already know).

I may be off base here, just let me know. If it looks like you just read something posted from the poster child of A.D.D., you did. I hope this makes sense, lol.

I can't speak for everyone Boom, but my dilemma is that I grew up in a time where cats were musicians. It took them many years to hone their craft. With this, that was the main reason that you got all that funk and soul and good rock back in the 70's.People were in tune with every aspect of the vibe coming from the music itself. The musician and the music were one entity. My generation got spoiled with that.Where do you go after Marvin, Stevie and Michael?Nowhere but down. The reason why I can't relate to it is that there is no originality.I know there is not many stones left unturned, but atleast be different.Even in the 90s, cats did not play a lot of their own instruments, but atleast they could sing. The newest thing, I even attempted to dig was Justin Timberlake's newest, and that was only because it had an old school beat.

Truth is, you are right. You shouldn't care.Ironically, this is the subject that started most of the nonsense over at OSHH.You are your own person with your own musical likes and dislikes. You should be able to like what you like and express it on any forum or board without worrying about what others feel about it.I am primarily known for breakbeats but that doesn't mean I won't break out some Norah Jones,Sting,Phil Collins,Pat Metheny,Luciano Pavarotti or even Tom freakin' Jones if I'm in the mood to hear some.
