In This Age of Music

Whats the take on music today? Be it the styles, genres, the industry, the big 3/4... what do you think.

I think its pretty ironic that we live in a society that promotes obscene individualism and narcissism and yet nobody is original with their music. Artists, DJs, producers, promoters, A&R. Admittedly the Music Business folk do go with what makes money so what ever MTV has on today is what WB, BMI, Atlantic, is going to promote. I felt I could express my views in rhymes better than formal writing:

The age of music today / it seems to correlate with society's lasting decay / will it ever be able to find its way into a land that only my lyrics are allowed to play // when you look at me and say wow / if only I had the tenacity to be that low brow / to make music for money and not fame / to train my brain to think clear and not fear the mans leer // its an age where hip-hop has to sell out / to be about / cars, pussy, money, weed / where are all my brothers who see what I see // who look at the tree of todays life / is that really the branch from which I want to pluck my wife / no I want to live in a world where Im allowed to roll my own dice / not live in a society of pet mice // who will come save us / pave us the way / lead us astray from the current way of blind acceptance and moral disarray // will it be me / will it be you / will it be all of us if we so choose // first we must free the music / free the people who use it / to control what we hear / what we fear / and tell us what we must hold dear // sure being ignorant is bliss / but for those of us who aren't content / all of you ignorant fucks show us what life really is

^That is deep man.

...Deeper then where Haddock swim\ amungst the whales, puffers, and yellow fin\\ 2na like chali, oh I'm sowwy, I digress\ Put on your Sunday's best, cuz a mad poet's in the house.

^This right here, is why I don't even try to rhyme.

Now as far as the music industry goes, that's a whole nutha story. I think there's all kinds of great Hip Hop out now and other types of music, I just think it's harder to sift through all the fluff to get to it, that's all.

Thats for sure. I think the problem isn't that there is a lack of good music, its that few people take the time sift through shit before they get to the good stuff. I had a music recording professor tell me one time that he thinks there are three levels of art.

Art
Good Art
Fine Art

Anything that anybody thinks is art is art but it takes more to make something good art, and fine art is reserved for those build so well on existing formulas of art that they create new characteristics (originality)
