@ whyaduck, I love that album, wish I had that pressing. I started with the Ryko CD version though so it's kind of hard to deviate from that at this point since the song sequencing is so different. I probably listen to Radio City the most these days.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Since records and CDs are packed away, I'm just gonna post this. My favorite 60s soul tune bar none.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
I love soul music - particularly 60s and 70s soul, but I would hardly consider myself any type of expert on it. I buy the stuff when I can, a bunch in the last year or two on vinyl. I'll try to post some later when I get my records and turntable set up after a cross-country move.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Beach House - Depression Cherry CD Bought this one on a whim the other day at a big box store. Both the CD and the current LP pressing come in a faux-velvet sleeve. I've been vaguely aware of this band but have never really listened to any of their albums. Probably because I'm too busy catching up on older stuff. At any rate, this is female fronted dreamy, indie pop type stuff thaby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteBoombat Really love The The. Nice pick. I have to say that Dusk is my favorite by them. I agree as well, these are good additions to a collection. Dusk is a great album as well. I find it hard to pick a favorite. The run from Burning Blue Soul through Dusk is just fantastic IMHO.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
The The - Mind Bomb Not sure how to describe this...artsy pop music of the highest order. If you like this type of thing, you definitely need a few albums by Matt Johnson/The The in your collection.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Yeah, I know what you're saying. There are some records that have a sentimental/personal vibe to them, that are just worth buying, even if they are a bit more expensive than a regular purchase. I think the most I've ever spent on anything has been around $100, and even that is rare these days. If I had the money to spend at the right time and saw a few particular records for sale, Iby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Just thought I'd pass on some links to my friend's store. I don't have any business interest in the store at all, just trying to help out a friend and spread the word a little. He runs an online record shop (a one man operation), mostly all new stuff, but a nice selection of various types of music I think people on here would appreciate. Service and packing are first rate and he isby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
The Durutti Column - Return of the Durutti Column Here is my vinyl copy of the album. This was a fancy reissue done by Factory Benelux a year or two ago, complete with a redesigned version of the sandpaper jacket.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
@Rchecka, I'm a huge fan of the Durutti Column, but that is one of their albums I don't have. I highly recommend the first three albums, as well as the album "Vini Reilly". Most of these albums have been reissued in one form or another over the years as well, so they shouldn't be too hard to find if you look around. Whatever you do, don't buy the 4 Men with Beardsby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
@whyaduck, my copy of the Live @ Carnegie Hall album is the current CD, which runs about $5. Sounds great. I've come across used LP copies from the 70s in the wild but they are always trashed. If you really want it on vinyl, I would probably just get the MOFI. Most people seem pleased with their newer run of LPs from the past few years. The 3-4 I have are all great, no complaints from me. MOby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Already outside my price range. I'll stick with my cheap 2-fer CD copy, or a 70s/80s reissue if I ever come across it in the wild.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
I have an extra download card for the Estranged - s/t (i.e. 3rd) LP I posted awhile back. If anyone wants it, shoot me a PM. The album is a retro post-punk kind of thing that sounds a bit like the Wipers more downcast stuff. I think it's a great album and better than any of their earlier stuff.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
^I need to get some more Withers stuff. I have his "Live at Carnegie Hall" album, which is a monster...by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
I dig this album, but don't listen to it all that often. I thought the follow up was kind of weak/bland, and didn't like the stuff I heard from their latest album at all. Their early indie-label recordings didn't do much for me either. This one and "Return to Cookie Mountain" are both good though. Quoterchecka RN... I was never a huge fan of this band, but I liked some of their stuff during the 90s. I thought Angel Dust was a good album. At some point I need to go back and check out more of their stuff. The first 3 Wipers albums are absolutely essential, and I agree about buying direct from Zeno. YOM was actually my introduction to the band, but I like the albums that bookend it more. I do not know the later stuff all that well, but I do have Silver Sail on vinyl and that is a great album. I also like that Zeno/Greg Sage essentially keeps the whole catalog in print by offering affordable CD-Rs oby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
@Rchecka, that is the one reissue by the band that I've thought about picking up but haven't yet. I have the old CD version. I read somewhere that this new reissue actually has different mixes so they aren't the same. Now I do have CD and LP reissues of Siamese Dream and Gish, and those are great. Really well done. I also agree the band is never going to go back to their heyby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
I honestly did not know about the other Associates. I know the Association hahaha.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Associates - Sulk The Associates were one of most unique bands of the post-punk era IMHO. They seem to take the experimentation of Berlin-era Bowie even further, and you've got Billy Mackenzie's vocals, which are all over the place. This is their second full length album and often thought of as their best work, though I'd put the Fourth Drawer Down comp. just ahead of this.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
I saw that record awhile back in a local store and nearly bought it, but the vinyl had a couple dealbreaker scratches, so I ended up putting it back on the rack. Will keep an eye out for a decent copy. Quotewhyaduck Manu Dibango - Soul Makossa Atlantic 1972 promoby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
The Estranged - S/T (2014) One of the best albums out of last year that I've heard, this album is a big leap from their previous material IMHO. They do remind me of the Wipers a bit, but have their own thing going, great dark punk rock/post-punk hybrid. Hope they don't wait too long to put out another LP. Stream/buy:by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Doom - C.F.S. Latest album from long running d-beat hardcore band out of the UK. I wouldn't say this is their greatest album, or even in my top 2 or 3 releases from them, but it doesn't tarnish their legacy one bit either. Full album stream/buy: Also available on LP from various distros...by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
^Listened to a couple tracks on youtube, not bad at all. I'd imagine they would've been interesting to see live. SST put out a lot of weird shit in the late 80s/early 90s. I used to trade tapes with a guy that had a bunch of albums by those types of bands (i.e. non-hc/punk SST stuff) but I haven't heard them in quite some time. If you like psychedelic rock, try some of the old Sby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
@whyaduck I'm a fan of that X Ray Spex album as well, took awhile to grow on me, but it's a classic for sure. I do not have any GSH in my collection...need to rectify that eventually.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Holly Golightly - The Good Things One of the bigger names in indie garage rock. I saw her live maybe a little over ten years ago and her sound had evolved quite a bit from this album to an almost country-ish, bluesy sound. This album is more straightforward garage rock, but without the 70s and 80s punk influences that so many latter day garage bands took to the extreme. The sound is more bby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Donny Hathaway - Everything is Everything Legendary late 60s/early 70s soul artist. Not much else to day. This disc is from one of these "Original Album Series" sets that seem to be pervasive now that CD sales have tanked. Lots of labels are offering some variation on this theme nowadays, sometimes I pick them up for $10. Great way to get a lot of music when your budget is tight.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
The Gun Club - Pastoral Hide & Seek + Divinity 5th album by this legendary band, reissued with a contemporary half studio/half live EP as bonus tracks. This definitely mellower than the critically acclaimed Fire of Love, so if you want fast/loud, probably not the best Gun Club album to go with. That said, I probably reach for this one and Mother Juno way more lately than anything elseby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Caravan - For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night 60s/70s Canterbury Scene band. Definitely not your typical "prog" type sound, this is as much as a psychedelic pop record as anything else. Maybe not their absolute best album but worth grabbing if you find it out in the wild for a good price.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
@ Rchecka, PM me if you want to check out some Jam stuff. Re: Tyrone Davis, I have a bunch of 60s and 70s soul stuff. Definitely no expert in that area, but I dig it.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
