Lama - Ja Mik Atilde Ei Muuttunut Finnish HC/Punk here. This is a compilation of Lama's early 7'' singles and EPs. While I don't think it is quite as powerful as the band's LP material, it's very good. These songs sort of tread the line between traditional early 80s hardcore and less speedy (though still uptempo) punk rock.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Tyrone Davis - Can I Change My Mind An upbeat, semi-obscure, Northern-Soul-ish LP from the late 60s. Bought this on a whim because a local store had a sealed copy on the wall for a good price. Turned out to be a good move. This is great.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Media Mail and First Class seem to have gotten a lot worse over the last year or so. I've noticed packages taking way longer. Not just stuff I order, but things I mail out, whether large or small, records, or anything else. USPS just isn't that reliable anymore because they laid off a ton of staff. That means less people to move packages and more time involved in getting things froby LionsMouth - General Discussion
Paul Schutze - Apart Listened to the first half of this double album of ambient music recently. I have a bunch of Schutze stuff but just got around to this one. Not much to say, other than he was a heavyweight of the 90s underground ambient scene, often associated with post-industrial type music or the short-lived "isolationism" thing. Much of his catalog is now OOP, but he has aby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Quotewhyaduck Paul Weller - 22 Dreams I really need to get some Weller solo stuff. I'm a big Jam fan and even like some of the Style Council stuff but I don't know his solo career at all. That record sounds interesting for sure. Have you heard his latest album? The reviews have been very positive, but I've not heard it.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Quotewhyaduck Musta Paraati is entirely new to me - it's got a mood going. Generally I'll pass on goth flavored music (an ex- was a Sisters of Mercy fan - I truly hope I never hear "Black Planet" again as long as I live) but that works for me. I got that record from a punk distro and have recommended it to a bunch of people. Surprised it isn't more well-known at thisby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
^RE: The Soft Boys, I am a HUGE fan of that album as well as a lot of Robyn Hitchcock's solo work. That guy has made a lot of seriously amazing records. One thing about that reissue that you may be aware of is that it is in mono, that is true of both the CD and LP versions that Yep Roc did. This is because the original master tapes and the backup copy used for previous issues was lost orby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Musta Paraati - Peilitalossa Post-punk from 80s Finland. Reminds me of Killing Joke a bit, maybe not quite as aggressive. Nicely done reissue on Svart Records.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Freddie Hubbard - Red Clay Early 70s Freddie, moving into fusion territory a little bit but not overly so. Great album.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
@Rchecka, All the vinyl I have of Sun Ra are Scorpio Reissues. None of them are bad sounding, but I think they could be better. Comparison clips of old Saturn Copies, the Scorpios, and recordings of the original master tapes have confirmed this. Ever since reading about this: I've been holding out for some reissues that are closer to the master tape source than what is broadly aby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Yeah, I remember your big Sun Ra post. I've only got a handful of albums on vinyl and CD. I'm kinda holding off for a bit on buying more Sun Ra stuff because I want the official reissue campaign to get going, don't really want to shell out for gray area stuff going forward.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Sun Ra - Super Sonic Jazz One of his more mellow/accessible albums to be sure. Not much else to say other than I dig it.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Belle and Sebastian - Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance Avoided this band for a long time. When I first heard them in the late 90s thought they were trying too hard to rip off Bryter Layter-era Nick Drake and were overly self-consciously twee in a bad way. Earlier this year I gave a couple tracks from this album a shot and ended up liking them enough to want the album. This one is tby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
The Psychedelic Furs - S/T Although these guys would come up with a much slicker sound a few years later, this is straight up post-punk. There are definitely some Roxy-isms and Bowie-isms going on here, but I have no problem with that. Worth checking out if you've avoided this band based on their later material. You might dig this. Now, I do like their next two albums quite a bit andby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
The Nils - Self-Titled (1987) The only non-posthumous LP by this cult band from Canada, often compared to the Replacements. Fans seem to be a bit divided by this one, as it definitely lacks the immediacy of their earlier EPs and comp. tracks. I do like it, but it has the kind of energy sapping production that a lot of late 80s college rock type stuff had at the time. A couple tracks frby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Richard & Linda Thompson - I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight Classic folk-rock from the 70s UK, don't really know much about it except that is the album is highly acclaimed and I've meant to check it out for awhile. I got this CD awhile back but didn't have time to really sit down and listen to it until recently. Maybe not to everyone's taste here, but I digby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Broken Bones - Dem Bones Around the time when Discharge started to suck sometime in the early 80s (i.e. the Warning 12'' EP), Terry Bones, former Discharge guitarist, started up this band. I don't think they've ever really had the type of influence and impact that Discharge at their best did, but they are damn good. This CD has their first album with some bonus materialby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Never heard of this band. Taang put out a lot of good stuff here and there, both homegrown and through UK licensing agreements with labels like Fire and Captain Oi!. One thing I will say is that they're one of the absolute worst mailorder places I've ever dealt with, and I will never deal with them direct again unless it's through eBay, and even then I might think twice. Quotewhyaduck Thanks! That one was just to start - later I'll post pictures of my Brand New collection! Haha. Too funny. Quote Agreed re: 70s jazz. A local shop (Record High in Phoenix - highly recommended) recently bought an absolutely mint collection that was very heavy on late '60's through '80's jazz. They priced and put out about 100 or so recordsby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Theatre of Hate - Westworld 80s post punk. By the name you'd think they were some sort of goth type band but they really don't give off that vibe at all. There is strong rhythmic undercurrent as well as some spaghetti western touches here and there. Good stuff. Produced by Mick Jones from the Clash if you can believe that. They had a bunch of live releases before this one, but thby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
@Whyaduck, welcome! That record looks interesting. I always look for 70s jazz when I'm browsing used vinyl. That stuff is WAY undervalued among record collectors and jazz nerds IMHO and there are a lot of gems out there that can still be picked up dirt cheap or at least at reasonable prices. I will definitely keep an eye out for that one. There is a store near me that seems to specializeby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Instigators - Nobody Listens Anymore Think I may have posted this before, but oh well... The Instigators were an 80s political punk group from the UK. This album originally came out on Bluurg, which was the Subhumans' label. Compared to where the Subhumans were at this point, Instigators are a lot more straight for the throat. This copy is a recent 30th Anniversary reissue on Skuldby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
The Jam - All Mod Cons Third LP from the Jam, often said by some to be their best. As good as it is, I like their next two LPs more. Since adding this to my collection I now have both reissue LPs (via a recent box set) and old LP copies (mix of UK/US/CA pressings) of all their studio albums, in addition to a CD boxset I acquired a few years back. Now I just need to get some of those pricby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Madness - One Step Beyond Not much to stay about this. Classic 2 Tone Ska and you can probably pick this up really cheap. I'm not sure if I would rate this quite as high at the debut albums from the Specials and The English Beat, but it's good.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
That is awesome.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Red Rockers - Condition Red LP Early 80s Punk Rock that take a lot more from pre-hardcore 70s punk bands like the Clash than any of their contemporaries. This is the kind of record that only punk collectors probably know about as it has gotten very little exposure over the years. I can't remember where I first heard of it. Maybe an old music blog or something? I don't knoby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Haha. That is funny. I remember in the 5th or 6th grade every kid would brag about owning that tape even if they didn't simply because of all the media flack they got and it seemed "rebellious". Years later, some of my friends had some local "Booty House" mix tapes that made 2LC sound like poets by comparison. Funny stuff. Another time I was in a record store and lateby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Hip Hop
Haha, yeah. There are so many classic rap albums that have at least one or two tracks I end up skipping when they come on because the lyrics are so bad. Quoterchecka ^Great album, I really like that one too. I had to laugh at the "cringeworthy" comment, I think you're right and that's probably safe to say about a lot of good Hip Hop albums.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Hip Hop
O.C. - Jewelz Listened to this in the car today. I definitely don't like it as much as his first album, but it's good. More sophisticated, smother production and a fair amount of guest spots. There are a couple lines that are pretty cringeworthy, but overall it's a good album.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Hip Hop
Chelsea - BBC Punk Sessions CD These guys were one of the "2nd tier" bands out of the whole UK '77 punk scene, but they're good. Oddly enough this is the only thing by them that I own. Sometimes I will see their 2nd LP in the used bins, but I've heard that pales in comparison to their best stuff.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
