Thought about this on the drive in this morning...

...what are some of the greatest samplee/sampler combos?....in other words pairings where both songs represent the highest standards of the respective artists' catalogue or the impact of both songs were overwhelmingly significant.

In this particular instance, Eye was thinking of James Brown as the starting point...but really, the concept could apply to any number of heavily sampled artists.....

In the case of James, Eye went with........... The Payback x LL Cool J - Boomin' System

Again, this is based on the merits of each song individually, where they stand in terms of each artist's catalog, and considering whether or not there's an even more significant pairing....Eye also took into consideration songs (especially with James) that had a greater life in samples than when it was originally released....like Funky Drummer, which was a MUCH bigger hit in the breakbeat/sample era than it was when it was originally released....which, for the purposes of this exercise, decreases the value of the song when analyzing it for it's own merit...the sample caught on but, in terms of mass appeal, the song on a whole did not until the Hip Hop era.

Thoughts.....????

Interesting topic/thread, EyeGetz.

I feel you on your thoughts. I feel there's so many significant "pairing" of sample/samplee that, like you said, pretty much illustrates the highest standard in both of the pairs catalogue(s). Now, I can't get into the highest standards in terms of record sales and accolades (particularly from the originators)...but in terms of popularity and club/bar/house party/head-nod factor....stand-out songs/tracks in artists catalogues - the ones that got mad air play respectively....

....the ones that immediately come to mind, for me, are pairings like:

Playing Your Game Baby - Barry White x I got you Opin (remix) - black moon

Brickhouse - commodores x Get up (remix) - lost Boyz

Schoolboy crush - AWB x microphone fiend - Eric b & rakim

peace.
