About 15 or so years ago I made this mixtape using nothing but my old Hip Hop CDs that I still have, and beats I made on Acid Pro 3.0 on an old Windows 98 PC.
As you can see from the cover art, back then I took the job quite seriously by including downright goofy Hip Hop skits with a little help from my friends. I made a lot of the beats myself including a remix of Dan the Automator's Lovage album. I even tagged my friends boat for the cover art (that's my friend Troy wearing my wife's homemade police shirt)
The mix was shared and burned and re-shared hundreds of times over the years, and just like my Dumpster Funk mixes, I still get people asking me about it from time to time. Recently a few of my friends asked for a digital DL of the mix as their CD-R wore out years ago. So I'm dropping it here for prosperity for all those interested in good old late 90s and early 2000s Underground Hip Hop.
In hindsight, except for the skits which are over the top and admittedly dorky, I think the mix stood the test of time. I still think it's one of the better examples of Hip Hop mixes and Hip Hop beats I've ever dropped. It took me about a year to do this mix. I worked on it, listened, reworked, remastered, relistened, drove around in my car getting the levels right, etc.
It reminds me of how much more serious I was about making a good Hip Hop mix than I am today.
I think as I got older I got too serious about family and kids and jobs and life and so I haven't made one like this in years. This reminds me that I'm not getting any younger and I still have it in me, I just need to put my nose back to the grindstone and do something like this again.
Long story short, I'm back in the lab, I'm working on a real beat tape, strictly Hip Hop beats, strictly my own production and I'm gradually getting back the passion I had when this PU4 mixtape was dropped. I realized something, and that's that I
need to create this kind of thing. It's a desire to create for the love of the process and for a love of the final outcome. I do it because it makes me, my friends, family, and acquaintances of mine happy and for no other reason. There's no money to be made for me, I'm not a professional beat smith for a living, it's simply a passion that's about the enhancing, mixing, and reinterpreting music.
I know, and I apologize, this all sounds long-winded and corny but it really is what it is. I'm sure that this forum itself came from that same passion. So anyways, I hope that some of the good people here will enjoy this old mixtape I made for what it is.
