I just learned a helpful little trick recently that I wanted to pass along to my fellow phone zombies.
Turn off your phone for 1 hour each night after work.
Just press the power button and forget about the thing.
Delay all social media, texting, calls, emails and general correspondence for one hour. Use that time to listen to music without distraction, build with family and friends face to face, whatever. Just pick your gadget free hour activity and stick to it without touching your phone.
It's awkward at first, and you'll find yourself grabbing your powered off phone because you forgot you were a zombie for a minute. But put it back down and keep it off for another 55 minutes so you get in that full hour.
Speaking personally, just listening to music without any distraction is worth it alone, because when you are in phone zombie mode you can listen to an entire album and not really hear any of it. Think about this when you're eating dinner with friends or fam... there's nothing more obnoxious than a phone zombie across the table you are trying to build with sticking their heads up saying "what?" 3 seconds later.
Whatever you missed in that hour of not being attached like a dog on a leash can wait while you reboot your virtual self and learn how to focus on the real world again.
I've done this for 2 weeks straight and I decided I'm gonna keep on doing it. Some of you guys reading this may find the same kind of satisfaction from the nightly phone shut down so I'm passing it along.
Take this 2 cents for what it's worth. If it doesn't apply to you then maybe you got a rotary phone and your internet makes an awful screeching noise while you try to connect to your AOL email.
