Turntables
July 22, 2012 06:33PM
I need some input on a new turntable. I was borrowing a Numark for a while but a friend took it back about a month and half ago...in the mean time I desperately needed something so I grabbed a cheap (cheap) Sony from a friend for the short-term and should be ready for a purchase by the end of the summer.

I'm looking at some of the entry-level models like Rega P1 and Pro-ject Debut III. Those are the two I'm most interested in at this point...I've also toyed with the idea of a used 1200. Either way, this Sony is killing me, any help fellas?

I've had my Stanton Str-8-100s for well over 12 years now, I use them every day for numerous hours and they have never hesitated to start and stop on a dime. I'm no Q-bert, but I'd say my scratching skills are much better then they ever would have been had I bought any other brand.

I'll add that Technics, as everyone knows, is the industry standard and those who have them are as adement about that being all there is as I am with my Stantons, I've used both, and I'm partial to my ST8-100s but I paid 500+ a piece for the pair, so it was no drop in the bucket. But over 12 years later they haven't hiccupped even once, you get what you pay for.

DJ Ready Red, once a Technics man has officially switched to the STR-8-150s which are the flagship of the Stanton brand, but he's their spokesperson (getting paid to promote the decks) so maybe that's the money talking when he says it's the best, but maybe not, he's a good person and a genuinely honest dude, so I believe his testimonials.

Thanks for the advice, I'm definitely gonna do some research on that model now. Sounds like a lot of functionality for DJ-use I wouldn't use but ultimately a reliable work-house is what I'm after.

I kind of restarted, several years back, with a new set of turntables..cheap - copped a Numark Battle Pack, that included two cheap Numark turntables (I forget what model) and a numark mixer, and a set of headphoens (in a box)....copped it for like $350 or so - not sure if the price has risen over the past 8 years or so....

They did the job and worked for the year that I had them, but copped those only to get me back started spinning again, knowing i'd ultimately cop a set of Technic 1200's - and a new mixer (which i ended up doing a year later, once my chips was up). Sold the Battle Pack to some kid for like $250 or so, so I could recoup some of the money I spent buying it.

dont' know if you'd consider an all-in-one package like that..?.....but, it's cheap.....

peace.

Thanks for the tip, definitely a good look for someone that wants to start DJ'ing but I'm looking higher end (will probably drop a little more than that on a single table) and am not necessarily looking for DJ functionality (leaning towards the Technics since its an all around work-horse)....at this point I don't have the cash, space or motivation to get two tables but its something I'll be looking into for the coming years.

I'll be using this 95% for listening with the very occasional sample load. I'm thinking about $350-$400 here (probably a little more shipping included) and the Project III and Rega P1 seem to be no-brainers for super simple, nice listening (one of them doesn't have a button for the switch from 33 to 45 and requires a manual belt change, kind of a turn off obviously). rchecka got me thinking about the Stanton but much if not all of the DJ functionality would be lost on me. At this price a used Technic 1200 isn't out of the question and I know it'll last into the future for whatever functionality I want.

Thanks again for the help fellas, I'll keep sounding off here as I think about the purchase.
