I don't think it's so much a function of renewed animosity towards the US, really that has always been there (in the modern history of the peninsula at least), as much as a new and young (and largely unchecked) leader seeing how far he can push things.

Honestly, another war with North Korea would mean the US squashing it like a fly, IMO it's the initial catalyst--whatever sort of preemptive strike that Kim Jong Un is threatening--that's scary. N. Korea knows that if they start shit that would be the end of it and them, I think at this point it's a case of a shit-talking young leader and his fanatics just pushing buttons and boundaries.

China also does NOT want N. Korea gone, and even though they're rightfully unhappy about all this recent nonsense, the last thing China wants is a border with a US ally...with N. Korea gone that's what would happen it seems. So while China is certainly not all buddy-buddy with the US, they've got a vested interest in seeing this calm down as well.

Overall I don't think a full-out war is what's scary, with a declaration of war the US' firepower could literally extinguish the entire country, it's that a rogue state in 2013 can accomplish a lot of damage with a stupid and careless initial strike.

Well, let' hope that this fades away as other scares have. (I guess another scary thing is that N. Korea happily sells weapons to all sorts of rogue and unstable states).

When you say young, you mean like going thru puberty then, because that explains everything.
The thing is they wanna nuke us and we'll never nuke them unless they have their hand on some giant red button.
They are showing us the big red button but in reality the red button is a red crank on a jack-in-the box.
I saw footage of our bombers making a mock run in record time over South Korea, surely Kim saw the same footage, it should quell any country's normal supreme leader (whatever that is) but he's not even batting an eyelash.
