I took my wife to see good old
Scott Weiland and his newish band the Wildabouts last night and it was a damn good time. For those unaware of the guys accolades, he's the ex-lead singer of Stone Temple Pilots. He was the heart and soul of that band, the face and the voice, but they canned him because "they didn't have any other choice claiming his dismissal was caused by addiction and persistent tardiness." ...more at
NME
He wasn't supposed to be singing STP songs but he cowrote them and apparently said fuck it I'm singing whatever I want cuz we heard all the good grunge classics last night.
^"Drivin' faster in my car. Fallin further from just what we are."
^Sure, he was fucked up, but in a good way. My wife commented that his voice sounds exactly like his STP originals and he ruled the stage unwavering whilst drinking a strange concoction of something unknown in a silver canister.
^The guitarist was so on point, my words cannot do his licks justice. Every so often he'd bend down and start tinkering with something on the floor and the guitar would start echoing, looping, and completely changing sounds. He switched out different guitars 6 times throughout the fairly short show.
Weiland was also fucking around with some cool gadgets I couldn't ID, toys that made noise, but still very cool toys.
Between the STP classics and the new stuff his show was very well rounded and even the newer stuff I couldn't recognize I loved.
Besides the shitty opening band it was a fantastic experience.
^except for the dumb-fuck record guy.
Then there was the guy in the STP T-shirt who just had to bring every single Stone Temple Pilots MOV double gatefold reissue to the show. Every time Scott sang a classic from an album this guy would hold up that album yelling "I got this on RECORD!" like a total fucking tool and then he would display it rotating it from the bands gaze to the audiences gaze as if we didn't know what album the song was on. If I wasn't having so much fun I would have said to him, "Dude chill the fuck out your being a giant ass kiss right now. We get it already, you got the records, now put those things back in your coat till the show is over instead of giving us the super-fan album cover slide show." Scott was really annoyed by this he actually seemed to go out of his way to shake other peoples hands near him but not his. I suppose he was thinking in 30 minutes I gotta sign this schmuck's records of a band that fired me so fuck it.
Another guy actually brought in a guitar for fucks sake to be signed. This would not have worked anywhere else but it was such a small venue and crowd that he was able to stash it away somewhere but he'd bust it out and play air guitar with the real guitar during all the big solos, Jen and I were laughing our asses off at him because he was just on cloud nine.
Ranting and rambling over, in summary...
Go see this show if it comes to your town you will not be disappointed.
