If I had to put these guys into a nice neat little box I couldn't but I'd try anyways. File under cosmic funk, or cosmic jazz. Imagine if Sun Ra had a funk band that was way more mellow than he was, this is how I imagine that would be.

The Heliocentrics - Out There 2xLP



So, Rchecka sent me this album and has officially turned me onto these guys. From the name, you can tell they are big into Sun Ra. Musically, this very hip-hop influenced instrumental funk with some nice grooves. Strong drums, with the rest of the instruments pushed back...the way the mix was done reminds me a bit of David Axelrod also. At any rate, this is a nice double album, engaging through out. Rock and jazz fans that dabble in funk will probably dig this a lot.

Right now ..

Jay Richford & Gary Stevan - Feelings lp . Although this album is very laid back and tends to have a disco , jazz , or soul sound , it's still funk at its core . Italian sound library stuff at its best . It says Jay Richford & Gary Stevan , but it is actually Sandro Brugnolini and Stefano Torossi . Apparently they couldn't record under their names due to contractual issues . I'm no expert on the 70s Itallian scene , but I did know these names and I'm glad I jumped on this one . It's definitely funky enough for my tastes , but laid back enough for a Sunday morning , even though there are a few uptempo joints .
