Asylum Party - The Grey Years Vol. 1 2xCD Volume 1 of a two-volume discography set from this French coldwave/post-punk band. If you like you're post-punk with drum machines, synths, and a general sound that skirts the edge of old-school goth rock, you'll like this band. This volume covers their debut mini-LP Picture One (1988) and the cult classic Borderline LP (1989). The latterby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Mixcloud Link This is an ambient/new age (not corny new age though) mix from an old friend of mine.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
I'm not expert on D 'n B but I liked that Dieselboy mix. That's some hyperactive stuff for sure.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa Borbetomagus - Live In Allentown Agaric Records, 1996 Would you say this disc is a good place to start with them? I don't have anything and need to pick up something by them eventually.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
I'll have to check this out. I know at one point a lot of people were critical of how his DJ sets had evolved because he was playing more commercial house stuff. Personally I love the production work he did under the names Kosmic Messenger and Silent Phase. The Silent Phase album on Trasmat is a real gem worth seeking out. The KM comp is harder to come by and I still need to get a copy eby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa Satyricon - Volcano Red Ink/Columbia, 2002 Never heard this one but I loved Nemesis Divina at the time and later bought the first two albums. I knew they got popular later but I had no idea they were ever signed to a major.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
FYI two recent Steve Roach albums are "name your price" on Bandcamp right now. Probably won't be for long, so grab them now and pay a few bucks if you can. Anyone unfamiliar with his work should check thesse out: Painting In The Dark (name-your-price), by Steve Roach This Place To Be, by Steve Roachby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa The Suspects - Voice Of America original release by Torque Records, 1996 - this reissue by Grave Mistake Records / Six Feet Under Records, 2016 Never heard of this band but those tracks sound pretty good.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
^I think I get where you are coming from, even though I'm a bit younger than you and definitely wasn't around for the first wave. In today's world, music has become hyper-subgenrefied, even more so than it was in the 80s and 90s. I'm not even sure a band like Fugazi would be successful (in an independent sense) if they were formed today because they don't fit into a neatby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa Spiderpact - Goatspeed Into Magenta Vacuum True Face Of Evil Records, 2008 Never heard of this and checking out some of the clips, it's definitely veering into "out there" black metal. Do you know if the Goatspeed guy in this band is the same one that played in Beastmilk?by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
^Nice. All those tracks sound very good from the sound clips.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa Fugazi - Steady Diet Of Nothing Dischord Records, 1991 Feel free to call Fugazi whatever you want. I think anyone serious about listening to their music knows that they don't fit neatly into one genre. For a long time I will admit that I thought this was one of their weaker albums, but with time it has grown on me a lot. It's just a bit more subtle than mostby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
^That looks interesting for sure. As I'm sure you've heard, the album is being reissued on vinyl soon through VMP. I'd like to see a wider release, maybe a comprehensive multi-LP/CD set that includes all those bonus cuts that are on your unofficial one and the Japanese CD from a few years ago.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Hip Hop
Main Source - Breaking Atoms Haven't played this one in a long time. No explanation needed for this classic.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Hip Hop
Other than Hank, Lefty Frizzell, and Wanda Jackson I had never heard of any of these artists before listening to this mix. Wasn't crazy about track 9 but other than that I liked pretty much all of it. Some of the steel guitar stuff near the end is super fast.by LionsMouth - Member Submissions
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa QuoteLionsMouth The Mutton Birds - Salty I don't know how I missed out on these guys before now. Excellent stuff there. Another one I need to keep my eye out for. Oh, don't worry. I only discovered them ten years ago through the Big Takeover magazine. Jack Rabid is always name-dropping them. I'm not even sure their albums were released in the U.S. duringby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
The Mutton Birds - Salty Second album from this 90s guitar pop band from New Zealand. Some amazing songwriting on display here. Probably all but forgotten these days. I think the singer, Don McGlashan, is still doing solo albums but I've not heard any of them.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
The Circular Ruins - Pathways 2xCD This is a massive double album with lots of depth and variety. There are some subtle rhythms at certain points that I really enjoy, as well as ambient drift, gliding keyboard melodies, quiet drones, sudden swells of sound, and even some factory-esque industrial moments here and there. It's a lot to take in but manages to be engaging throughout. Fby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa Timothy Leary & Ash Ra Tempel - Seven Up Die Kosmischen Kuriere / Ohr, 1973 - MG.ART, 2011 Looks like a trip for sure. Tons of ART stuff has been on my wantlist for years, just never got around to it. The only ART related stuff I have is E2-E4 and New Age of the Earth. The former is a recent CD edition remastered by MG, I thought he did a good job on that. It wasn&by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Laura Jean - S/T LP I guess you would call this "contemporary indie folk". Laura Jean is a singer/songwriter from Australia and this is her most recent album (from 2014), which was produced by John Parish. If you're thinking this is going to sound like PJ Harvey due to the Parish connection, forget it. This is a delicate, acoustic guitar-based record. There are some subtle aby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa QuoteLionsMouth Ashley Bellouin - Ballads LP That sounds great. Drawing Room looks like a label I need to spend some time checking out based on the stuff they have on Bandcamp. Yeah, I'd like to hear more stuff from the label too. I'm following them on Bandcamp now.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa Nun - Riv Skf / Margine If Product, 1984 Never heard of this, but the clip sounded pretty good. That remind me a bit of some of the early 80s drum machine + synth noise stuff from Severed Heads or Nocturnal Emissions.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Ashley Bellouin - Ballads LP I could've easily put this in the ambient/drone thread, but since Ms. Bellouin has a degree in music and appears to be approaches this stuff from more of a "high art" space, I thought it more appropriate to put it here instead. Each side of the LP is one long track that builds using a variety of instruments such as harmonium, electronics, guitby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Great story. It's funny how music can bring back memories like that. I don't have this one, still need a copy. I've got U.S. LPs of the first three albums and like those a lot. Unique band.by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteGordon Rekcikssa QuoteLionsMouth Caelum Bliss - Self Titled CD This is excellent stuff. I'm gonna keep an eye out for this for sure. I see they released a few cassette-only EPs, too. Looks like they'll be tricky to track down, but from the sound of the video you posted, well worth the effort. Thanks for posting this. I love finding stuff I really dig that I've never heardby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Quoterchecka ^Really interesting stuff but not exactly the kind of thing you'd want to play at work as I found out the hard way. I got some are you a Satanist looks. , yeah not client-friendly music at all!by LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Caelum Bliss - Self Titled CD File under: bands more people should know about. Caelum Bliss were a female-fronted gothic rock band from Detroit around during the 90s. Not sure how well they were known outside the area but this disc has held up very well over the years and deserves more attention. The band had two sides really, upbeat songs and slower, more dreamy/ethereal ones. Discogsby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Just wanted to say great mix. Anyone that hasn't heard this and has any interest in reggae or JA music at all should grab it.by LionsMouth - Member Submissions
Silicon Teens - Music for Parties LP Now here is a goofy, fun record I don't put on too often but really enjoy when I do. Silicon Teens were essentially a fake band put together by Daniel Miller (of the Normal and the founder of Mute Records) and the songs are all synthpop covers of well known songs. If you're expecting "Warm Leatherette" forget it, this is a lot more lby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Minutemen - The Punch Line LP This could've easily been in the post-punk thread, but I thought I'd put it here instead since the Minutemen embody what is great about punk rock in so many ways. This was their first proper LP, but it's really a 45 12'' and blazes by pretty quickly. The trademark funk-inluenced/jazz-influenced punk rock is on full display here, and thby LionsMouth - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
