Borbetomagus - The Eastcote Studios Session Dancing Wayang Records, 2016 Brand new album from my favorite noise outfit. This is just pure experimental jazz at the fringes of reason and sanity. Jim Sauter and Don Dietrich have been playing saxophone together since they were in junior high school, and playing with guitarist Donald Miller under the Borbetomagus name since 1979. There have beby Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
^I've not heard of this before, but I'll be on the lookout. I listened to some of the clips on the Bandcamp link, and that is some pretty interesting noise. I checked out this video on Vimeo, too. Definitely some cool stuff.by Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Ghost Bath - Moonlover Northern Silence, 2015 Atmospheric black metal. Lots of dynamics in these songs as far as the music itself goes. They get compared to Deafheaven a lot, but I prefer this record myself. Not quite as feedback-driven. Though with the post-rock stuff happening, I can see why people would draw that conclusion. These guys originally claimed to be from China, and theirby Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteLionsMouth because this band is very much a 90s phenomenon IMHO. I'd say that's pretty accurate. This is good stuff here. Much better than what has been coming out of this scene in the last 10-15 years for sure.by Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Quoterchecka ^Interesting. Kinda makes you wonder how one maintains his own website and record sales from prison. From what I understand, most of the recordings he made were done during the time he had been transferred to a prison in Oregon where they have somewhat more lenient conditions for inmates that don't cause any trouble. Since he has been back in California, he's been at a mby Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteLionsMouth I've seen this band's name float around punk and crust distros for years (didn't they do a lot of split releases?) What would you say is this band's best album? . They did at least 3 or 4 splits that I know of. One that came out about 10 years ago or so with Misery Index is probably the best of them. Of the three full lengths I have, Dance Hall Grind is theby Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Bathtub Shitter - Lifetime Shitlist Shit Jam Records, 2003 Japanese grindcore with hilariously mangled English for lyrics. The song below is titled "Fuck Hip Raper". I think they intended it to be about hip-hop, not rape, but I can't be sure. Some choice lyrics from this gem taken directly from the sleeve: "Innumerable loose ass Imitation on commercialism minby Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
^ That's some solid metal. I'll have to pick up a copy of that in the next day or two from their Bandcamp.by Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Bobby Beausoleil - Lucifer Rising The Ajna Offensive, 2016 I'm putting this one here because it definitely fits under the "outsider" and psychedelic categories. The history of the Kenneth Anger film is convoluted to say the least, so I'll just leave that part out and get into the music. The LP in the photo is a new pressing that just came out last week. Beausoleil iby Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteLionsMouth ^ That track actually reminded me a bit of Neurosis. Not bad at all. I stopped following new hardcore bands around the tail end of the 90s or so. Part of the problem was I overdosed on a lot of metallic hardcore before then and there were all sorts of second string copycat bands starting to pop up, so I didn't stick around for the next wave of good stuff. QuoteLionsMouth Funny fact: this CD is a German import from SPV, and all of the other releases I have on this label are heavy metal related. I've always thought that was weird about SPV. Like 99% of their releases are metal/harcdore/punk, but then they occasionally put out some country-rock/rockabilly/blues/ambient/techno albums. I'd love to be inside their A&R department.by Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuotercheckaIt's A Bad Brains Christmas Charlie Brown! Thanks for turning me on to this! Never seen it before. I'm gonna put this up on all the TV monitors in the cafeteria at my office building that are supposed to be showing nonstop corporate blather.by Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Mike Nock Quartet - In Out And Around Timeless Records, 1979 Gorgeous straight ahead jazz from pianist Mike Nock, along with some soulful sax playing by Mike Brecker. The real star for me here is Al Foster's tasteful drumming, though. He's never overbearing or trying to intrude on the melodies, just providing some solid rhythm and cool fills. This is good stuff for a solitary afby Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Pulling Teeth - Funerary A389/Firestarter Records, 2011 These guys were a hardcore outfit from Baltimore that broke up at the end of 2011. This was their final album, and it's my personal favorite, as it shows some progression away from the straight up speed-n-scream typically found around the time and into the more sludge-based soundscapes that a band like Integrity could do so wellby Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Man, the 80s were a great time for punk in Finland! Both of these are fantastic!by Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Dead Coast - Shambolic Greenway Records, 2016 Some very cool old school surf/psych here. This album sounds like it came out of 1968. The twangy guitars and laconic vocals are a great mix for my taste. This band is definitely going for a retro vibe, and they nailed it in my opinion.by Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Demdike Stare - Wonderland Modern Love Records, 2016 Excellent album from these guys that's more techno oriented and maybe not as far out as some of their earlier work. As much as i liked their more doom-themed, industrial/experimental stuff (and there's still some of that to be found here), I also dig this record in a big way.by Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
The Great Kat - Worship Me Or Die! Roadracer Records, 1987 Posting this one just for fun. It's cheesy as all get out, but not really any more so than my old Overkill albums. Plus, this women can actually shred. The videos I'm posting don't have great sound quality, but do capture the humorous quality of 80s metal that is sorely lacking in most of today's scene.by Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteLionsMouth The bog standard green label WB copies that sometimes turn up in used bins are nothing special IMHO. The best version of this album I have is from the Complete Original Black Sabbath CD box set. I agree that the old WB copies didn't sound too great. This one though just sounds tinny, thin, and flat. If I was a new collector and had a choice between one of the older green laby Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Inner Tube - Inner Tube I wasn't really sure which thread to post this record under, but it's definitely got a krautrock/psychedelic thing happening. The album is from 2012, released on Pacific City Sound Visions. Guitarist Mark McGuire and drummer Spencer Clark put this together, with each of them contributing some other electronics to the mix as well. I love McGuire's playby Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Quoterchecka Besides colored vinyl, what's their specialty? Any good? For the most part, I really dig the stuff Greenway puts out. Most of what I've bought from them is kinda punkish or art rock. I have this one 10" from Black Temple Shrines that I really like. They're kind of a garage rock outfit from Ireland. That Hiatus Kaiyote record has a really cool sound to it. It might even be something I could finally get my wife into because she really digs future soul. Thanks for the tip on that.by Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Abjects - Double Bind 7" Bubblegum garage punk from this London-based band. Maybe not the most original thing in the world, but it is a helluva lot of fun. The single came out earlier this year on Greenway Records.by Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
^That's some decent punk right there. I missed out on these guys back in the day. I can see why Dischord did a reissue of that EP. Has that 80s DC vibe to it.by Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
I haven't heard that Cure remix comp before, but I dig the one you posted there. I'll have to check the rest of that album out soon.by Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteLionsMouthHuman, Individual Thought Patterns, and Symbolic are all classics in my book. Definitely true. Symbolic is one of the all time metal greats. I've listened to that one so much, I think it's permanently engraved in my brain, and I still can't get enough of it.by Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Black Sabbath - Master Of Reality (2016 2-LP Remaster) I can't really say much about the original record that hasn't already been said before. What I can say is this remastered edition sounds pretty flat and one-dimensional. The vocals are the only thing that stand out, while all the instrumentation is just kind of lumped together in the back. It's not terrible, but not wortby Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Razormaid Chapter Six: Promotion rchecka has shown me light! I can't thank him enough for turning me on to the cool DJ comps. This is the first one I've had the chance to clean up and listen to all the way through. This thing is just packed with great dance remixes. Even my wife digs this, and normally she hates any music I listen to. A couple of the tracks from this are belowby Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
Kid Millions & Jim Sauter - Million Dollar Band Okay, so I am a huge fan of Borbetomagus and all their related projects, and I snapped up a copy of this single as soon as I heard it was being released. Sauter's sax playing is as intense as ever, and Kid Millions is just a perfect drummer for this project. I can't find a link to any audio of this single, so below is a videoby Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
QuoteLionsMouthGoing by the graphics and the band's style, you'd think this was released during the '80s heyday of hardcore punk I checked out the stuff on the Bandcamp link, and that is a 100% accurate statement. Definitely going to being looking for some stuff from these guys.by Gordon Rekcikssa - Crate Digging: Non Hip Hop
