After reading all the comments I thought I was going to hear Mel say something outlandish but after watching the video I can't say disagree with anything he said. His main points are through the years the music industry changed Hip Hop to platform to promote negativity. Thus as result you see all that negativity present in the lives of many of this generation. His point is no different than Homboy Sandman's article of the power of words (here.

Rchekca stated "Dissed everyone in the Golden Age of Hip Hop and beyond as "that aint New York Rappin"."
On that point what Mel said was right after Rakim & Kane there was no progression. Mos,Talib,Jay & BIG are dope emcees but are they radically different than what came them,ie Rakim & Kane? Compare Rakim,KRS,Kane to Run DMC,Whodini and others there's huge progression but with many the 90's era emcees it's just revamped Rakim/Kane style of rapping. No real progression. In my view that's not dissing the truth.

You didn't think that it was immature (< for lack of a better word) for him to say women rappers should only rap about women stuff like their periods? Come on, no full grown man should say shit like that publicly with no hesitation if he ever wants to get respect from women or non-sexist men alike. I never read that Homeboy sandman link, but I'll bet he didn't say anything that stupid.

He's entitled to his opinion on the caliber of their rapping skills but to say "That ain't New York Rappin" when referring to rappers born and raised in NYC rappin about their hoods it's a whole new level of disrespect. He could have said that's not good New York rappin or something like that, and it would have been simply his opinion, but to say "Their rappin isn't New York Rappin" is the equivalent of saying He's the only real New York rapper everyone else is fakin where they are from. He's acting like it's not enough to diss them and emasculate them, he's gonna remove their hood right out from under them. Big Daddy Kane was born and raised in Brooklyn, he has a right to rep that. That's essentially like when Trump was saying Barack Obama wasn't born in America so he has no right to be our president, that's petty bullshit, a unnecessary lie, a low blow.

Newsflash.....New York does not OWN Rap music.
neither does ONE race own it or have exclusive dibs on it.
Everybody is entitled to their own opinion about whatever, whatever..
I always say...just remember some of the stuff your grandma used to lay down to you about life.
It works.

^Beatmaster, not sure who the newsflash was intended for but I don't think anyone here thinks that New York owns Hip Hop, I certainly didn't insinuate that. Respectfully the "Remember your Grandma's words" was a bit preachy, albeit wise and true but also unnecessary. Granted. I don't think anyone would argue that Hip Hop was born in NYC, nor that it's a undeniable hot-spot for Hip Hop and always will be. And I know race was never even mentioned at all. Melle Mel himself said female rappers should only rap about their periods, implying rap only belongs to men, but other then that dumbass remark by him, gender was never brought up either.

I was basically saying that Mel was out of line for saying "That ain't New York rapping" as if he (and his own crew) own the title of "New York Rappin," he can divvy it out as he sees fit and New York rappers outside of his circle ain't really doing real New York rappin. Frankly, he needs to be checked on that. Obviously there is a whole herd of NYC rappers that went way beyond what he ever did in terms of complexity, rhythm and style in the short-lived height of his career which ended many years ago. He's clearly so bitter about the New York guys that came after him and made more money or recognition or whatever, that he's resorted to pulling the "You ain't real NYC rappers" card. Likewise, if an Atlanta based rapper from yesteryear said today's Atlanta rappers aint really Atlanta rappin' because they are doing some next level shit then I'd say the same thing about that guy being bitter, jealous and full of shit too cuz he's not making money any more and so he's gonna slam the cats who are.

Frankly, if you think about it, in life being proud of where you are from is pretty stupid. I mean why be proud of where you came out of your Mom, it's just a place like any other. But in Hip Hop, as you know, (I'm not saying this as if you don't already know this, Beatmaster, I know you and everyone else knows) where you are from is a badge of honor, representing your hood, your family and crew and where you grew up is integral to your identity. It's why you act like you do, talk like you do, dress like you do, it shaped you, so Mel "removing" you from your own hood is really more than just a diss, it's an insult to your upbringing, it's basically like calling you a poser. I think that's pretty weak and small minded, just like a lot of the other shit he said on that clip, weak and small minded.

Mel is a living legend of Hip Hop, he should wear that badge respectfully and with a little dignity and show a little self restraint instead of looking like an out-of-touch, bitter old man pointing his decrepit finger at what innovators came next. When you get old you either do so gracefully with wisdom and class, or you turn into the guys in the movie Grumpy Old Men. It's not a good look for him at all, and it's he's making it harder on himself to be remembered for what he did opposed to what he's saying now that he's not making records anymore. He's becoming the classic fall-from-grace scenario and that's a damn shame.
