I think it's safe to say at one point I was one of the infamous trolls of Reddit vinyl of which you speak. Wasn't a fan of the likemindedness contest. I remember when Daft Punk came out with Random Access Memories. Those were the dark times of reddit vinyl. You couldn't go 5 minutes without some drone controlled by drones posting a picture of that album cover and then saying absolutely nothing other than "Looky what I got!"
At one point it became a walking, talking, living caricature of itself. Don't get me wrong there were still a lot of great collectors there making it worthy of sticking around, but eventually any topics or comments that were interesting and different were buried by catch phrases that were upvoted by downvoting teens. I invited a lot of the good people that I met there to this forum, thankfully some are still kicking it here.
But anyway, eventually I went out in a blaze of glory like the Cassini spacecraft will tonight.
I got banned for saying something honest (honest, therefore mean, because the two are synonymous there) and
I wrote up a little blog post about that strange social experiment.
Shortly after that I was unbanned and asked to contribute again by some fresh blood mods. Some of those guys were really cool people and they appreciated different opinions from time to time. But alas, it was never meant to be. I just can't be wasting my time there getting fired up over what amounts to nothing. Like for example seeing people bow down and worship "that album" that just came out for an entire year. Or when Christmas day rolls around, legions of teenage newbs with their brand new Crosley Cruiser and their Let It Be Mono pressing come in showing pics and the troll hordes all line up to piss on some kid's Christmas present. It's like, yeah, Crosley's suck, but can't you give them Christmas day to be excited and maybe wait til New Years to rain? But the anti circle jerk is just as strong as the circle jerk if not more strong and it's soul crushing to watch that.
Or when every 5 minutes someone would ask "Where can I get a 100 dollar awesome vinyls player?" It became as predictable as the guy getting pulled over by the cops going "Gee officer, I only drank 2 beers." Why is it
always 2 beers? Why is it
always spoon feed me my awesome 100 dollar awesome setup?
